QUESTION 1
CASE STUDY
LEVERS & GEARS IN SA FISHING
(Source: tinyurl.com/2k42vt3u)
In Kalk Bay, Western Cape, where fishing sustains livelihoods, levers and gears are essential
tools enhancing efficiency. Single class 3-levers play a vital role in the fishermen’s equipment. A
fisherman demonstrates this as he pulls his catch from the water, contending with the frustrating
snoek. The force applied by his arm acts between the fulcrum (his hand) and the load (the weight
of the fish and the net), showcasing the efficiency of a single class 3-lever.
Linked class 3-levers also contribute to the community’s daily tasks. Picture a group of people at
the marketplace using a pair of tweezers to pluck the spines from freshly caught fish – such as the
Cape bream, notorious for its sharp dorsal spines. The linked class 3-lever action allows them to
grasp the spines with ease, leveraging force between the fulcrum and the load to complete their
task efficiently.
Furthermore, gear trains complement these simple lever mechanisms. Mechanised winches,
using gear trains, assist in heavy net retrieval, multiplying force through mechanical advantage.
This integration of gear trains with simple lever mechanisms exemplifies the community’s
innovative approach to traditional practices, ensuring the sustainability of their fishing endeavours.
These gear trains and simple lever mechanisms, deeply rooted in traditional wisdom, sustainably
support Kalk Bay’s fishing practices, showcasing the community’s ingenuity and cultural heritage.

1.3 Identify the THREE ways in which levers change input movements
and forces to achieve the desired output movements and forces. (3 x 2) = (6)
1.4 Write the formula that will be used to calculate the mechanical advantage
if an output force and an input force are exerted on a lever. (4)
1.5 What condition must be met for a class 1-lever to have a mechanical
advantage? (2 x 2) = (4)
1.6 Calculate the gear ratio of a gear train if the driven gear has 15 teeth
and the drive gear has 135 teeth. Show all calculations. (6)
1.7 Class 3-levers are mentioned in the case study. Neatly draw a picture
showing the positions of the fulcrum, force and load for a class 3-lever.
Label each position accordingly: fulcrum, force and load. (6)
1.8 How do linked class 3-levers contribute to the efficiency of the community’s
daily tasks, as described in the case study? (6)

QUESTION 3
Are the following statements true or false? Only write the answer (true or false) next to
the question number (3.1–3.5).
3.1 A frame structure does not support its own weight as well as the load it must carry.
3.2 Struts are wooden or metal beams that are attached to the rafters.
3.3 Torsion occurs when a twisting force is applied to an object, such as twisting the lid
off a jar.
3.4 Beams in structures like parking garages spread the load to pillars, preventing
bending by distributing forces equally.
3.5 Suspension bridges are relatively quick and inexpensive to construct compared to
other bridge types.
