ASSIGNMENT (submission deadline TWO WEEKS from the date of assignment)
Rubble Mound Structure 05-09-2024 COMMON QUESTION TO ALL List 5 distinct layers of a rubble mound breakwater. Write the functional and structural design principles of each layer. (Write in your own sentences with your understanding).
1. Design a non-overtopping rubble mound breakwater in a water depth of 9m, off a
location with the high tidal level of 0.8m. The offshore wave climate is 4m with the mean period of 8s. The seabed is of very fine silt with a mean diameter of 0.1mm. Adopt a run-up of (Hdesign*(1+cot )/2), where is the side slope of the breakwater. 2. Design the armour layer of a rubble mound breakwater in a water depth of 9m. The maximum tide level at this location is +0.9m. Storm surge at this location is 0.5m. The offshore design wave height (Hs) is given as 5.2m and the mean wave period is 8s. Draw the typical breakwater section and highlight the armour layer only with dimensions. The seabed is of fine sand. Adopt the unit weight of rubble stones as 2.65 T/m 3, concrete: 2.4 T/m3; and, water: 1.03 T/m3, if required. 3. Design the armour and toe layers of a rubble mound breakwater in a water depth of 6m. The maximum tide level at this location is +0.9m. Storm surge at this location is 0.5m. The offshore design wave height (Hs) is given as 5.2m. Draw the typical breakwater section and highlight the present design part with dimensions. The seabed is of fine silty sand. Adopt the unit weight of rubble stones as 2.65 T/m3, concrete: 2.4 T/m3; and, water: 1.03 T/m3, if required. 4. Design the core layer of a rubble mound breakwater in a water depth of 12m. The maximum tide level at this location is +1.1m. Storm surge at this location is 0.25m. The offshore design wave height (Hs) is given as 8m. Draw the typical breakwater section and highlight your design part with dimensions. The seabed is of fine silty sand. Adopt the unit weight of rubble stones as 2.65 T/m3, concrete: 2.4 T/m3; and, water: 1.03 T/m3, if required. 5. Design the armour layer of the rubble mound breakwater to be constructed in a water depth of 12m with reference to CD. The maximum tide level is +1.8m and the storm surge is +0.8m. The offshore design wave height is 7m and period is 12s. Draw the entire cross section and mark the different water levels and salient details of the armour layer. 6. Design of a breakwater was carried out by adopting s = 26.5 kN/m3. But during execution, s of the stone was found to be 32 26.5 kN/m3. Will you accept the design? Justify your answer. 7. Design the armour layer of the rubble mound breakwater to be constructed in a water depth of 5m with reference to CD. The maximum tide level is +0.8m and storm surge is +0.5m. The offshore design wave height is 2.0m and period is 8s. Draw the section and mark the salient details of the armour layer. The seabed is of fine silty sand. 8. Design the rubble mound breakwater section in a water depth of 18m for Mormugoa Port. The highest high tide level is +1.2m. Storm surge at this location is 1.0m. The offshore design wave height (Hs) is given as 7.0m. Draw the breakwater design section with dimensions. The seabed is of coarse sand to rocky strata. Adopt the unit weight of rubble stones as 2.55 T/m3, concrete: 2.4 T/m3; and, water:1.03T/m3, if required. 9. Design a suitable armour layer for a breakwater to be constructed in a water depth of 14m. The high water level is +1.1m; design wave height is 6m and wave period is 9s. Draw the breakwater section with all salient dimensions for the armour layer. 10. Design the rubble mound breakwater section in a water depth of 12m for Chennai Port outer harbour development. The highest high tide level is +1.2m. Storm surge at this location is 1.0m. The offshore design wave height (Hs) is given as 9.0m. Draw the breakwater design section with dimensions. The seabed is of fine sand. Adopt the unit weight of rubble stones as 2.65 T/m3, concrete: 2.4 T/m3; and, water:1.03T/m3, if required.
