GLOBAL TOURISM TREND AND INSIGHT REPORT

2024
INTRODUCTION
Five years on since the breakout of the Covid-19 Pandemic plummeted global
tourism due to travel restricts, 2024 has seen a shift towards the pre-pandemic
levels, as the sector has seen a remarkable recovery, with most regions already
exceeding 2019 arrival numbers in the period January to September 2024. The
report also shows outstanding results in terms of international tourism
receipts, with most destinations with available data posting double-digit
growth compared to 2019.

Around 1.1 billion tourists travelled internationally in the first nine months of
2024, as the global tourism sector recovered 98% of pre-pandemic levels.
According to the latest World Tourism Barometer by UN Tourism, a full
recovery from the biggest crisis in the sector’s history is expected by the end
of the year, despite economic, geopolitical and climate challenges.

According to the UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, “The

strong growth seen in tourism receipts is excellent news for economies around
the world. The fact that visitor spending is growing even stronger than arrivals
has a direct impact on millions of jobs and small businesses and contributes
decisively to the balance of payments and tax revenues of many economies.”

WHAT ARE THE TOP THREE
TRAVEL INDUSTRY TRENDS
TODAY?
• The bulk of travel spending is close to home. Seventy-five percent of
travel spend is domestic. The United States is currently the world’s
largest domestic travel market, but China is set to overtake it in the
coming years. Stakeholders should make sure they capture the full
potential of domestic travelers before turning their attention abroad.

• New markets such as India, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe are
growing sources of outbound tourism. Indians’ travel spending is
expected to grow 9 percent per year between now and 2030; annual
growth projections for Southeast Asians and Eastern Europeans are both
around 7 percent.

• Unexpected destinations are finding new ways to lure travelers and

establish themselves alongside enduring favorites. Rwanda, for example,
has capitalized on sustainable tourism by limiting gorilla trekking permits
and directing revenue toward conservation.
