Foreword
This standard has been prepared by Section B Gewinde of the Normenausschuss Technische Grundlagen
(Fundamental Technical Standards Committee). It is an editorially revised edition of DIN 13-51:1988-12, with
the normative references updated and the designations modified in form, but not in substance, to conform with
standard terminology.

Amendments

The following amendments have been made to DIN 13-51:1988-12:

a) the title of the standard is now more precise;

b) in the German edition of this standard, the following terminology has been modified. The first term has
also been changed in the English translation:

⎯ Außengewinde (external thread) replaces Bolzengewinde (bolt thread);

⎯ Toleranzklasse (tolerance class) replaces Toleranzfeld;

c) the symbol “Ao” used to designate limit deviation has been changed to “es”;

d) the symbol “Au” used to designate limit deviation has been changed to “ei”;

e) in the German edition of this standard, the unit of measure for major diameter, pitch diameter and minor
diameter in tables 4 and 5 has been amended from “μm” to “mm”; this correction had already been made
in the previous English edition;

f) the normative references clause has been updated;

g) the annex “Explanatory notes” has been updated;

h) the standard has been editorially revised,

1 Scope
This standard specifies the tolerance classes for external threads to be paired with internal threads of
tolerance class “fine” (4H and 4H5H) as in DIN ISO 965-1. This pairing of threads aims to achieve an
interference fit; however, it should be noted that the actual dimensions of the external and internal threads in
the transition tolerance zone will result in either clearance or interference in the threaded joint.

2 Normative references
This standard incorporates, by dated or undated reference, provisions from other publications. These
normative references are cited at the appropriate places in the text, and the titles of the publications are listed
below. For dated references, subsequent amendments to or revisions of any of these publications apply to this
standard only when incorporated in it by amendment or revision. For undated references, the latest edition of
the publication referred to (including any amendments) applies.

5 Designation
In accordance with DIN ISO 965-1, an external thread for the tolerance classes specified in clause 4 of this
standard shall be designated as illustrated by the following examples:

EXAMPLE 1 M10 coarse pitch thread for tolerance class Sk 6:

EXAMPLE 2 M100 × 6 for tolerance class Sn 4 tight:

M100 × 6 Sn 4 tight

6 Dimensions

6.1 Limit deviations and tolerances

The threads with series 1 nominal diameters in tables 2 and 3 shall preferably be used, or, in descending
order of preference, those in series 2 and 3. Threads with nominal diameters of less than 3 mm are rarely
used.

Explanatory notes

This standard was developed on the basis of the so-called “very old standards”:

Supplement 14 to DIN 13 and 14 Metric screw threads ⎯ Screw threads for interference fit fastenings
without sealing action (for inserted ends of studs)

Supplement 15 to DIN 13 and 14 Metric screw threads ⎯ Screw threads for interference fit fastenings
with sealing action (for inserted ends of studs)
A&I-Normenabonnement - DaimlerChrysler AG Corporate Standardization HPC T333 - GR - EQS - Kd.-Nr.7044518 - Abo-Nr.00850810/003/001 - 2006-11-24 08:09:44

These were due to be withdrawn, because the tolerances for the pitch diameters and their position meant that
no true interference fit could be achieved. Instead, the actual dimensions resulted in clearance, or more rarely,
interference (see journal article in German, Kübler, K.-H.: Festsitzgewinde, ein Märchen?; Verbindungs-
technik 14 (1979), 6, pp.31-32).

However, it did not prove possible to withdraw these very old standards, which are used in industry and are
referenced in product standards for studs. As a consequence, the then responsible Normenausschuss
Gewinde (Screw Threads Standards Committee) decided to revise them, without changing the tolerances on
pitch diameter. A large majority favoured merging these two supplements as one standard, DIN 13-51, and
changing the thread profile to suit the relevant ISO Standards and DIN Standards. The title and scope were
also to make clear that thread tolerances do not necessarily allow a true interference fit.

DIN 8141-1 “ISO-metric coarse and fine pitch screw threads for interference fits in aluminium cast alloys with
diameters from 5 mm to 16 mm ⎯ Nominal sizes, tolerances and limits of size” deals with true interference fits.
As soon as this standard has become established in industrial applications, DIN 13-51 is to be withdrawn.
