Unit 8: System Deployment, OM&S,
Retirement, and Disposal
8.1 System Deployment Operations System deployment operations refer to the activities involved in getting a system ready for use in a real-world environment. This includes tasks like installation, configuration, testing, and ensuring that the system meets the required standards before it goes live.
8.2 System Operation, Maintenance, and Sustainment (OM&S)
System OM&S refers to the ongoing tasks needed to keep a system running smoothly over time. This includes daily operation, regular maintenance, troubleshooting, upgrading software, and ensuring the system's continued effectiveness and availability.
8.3 System Reliability, Maintainability, and Availability (RMA)
RMA refers to the ability of a system to perform consistently and reliably over time. Reliability means the system will work as expected, maintainability refers to how easily the system can be repaired or upgraded, and availability is the percentage of time the system is fully operational.
8.4 System Retirement (Phase-Out) Operations
System retirement involves decommissioning or phasing out a system that is no longer needed or has been replaced by newer technology. It includes safely shutting down the system, archiving data, and ensuring that all critical functions are either transferred or no longer required.
8.5 System Disposal Operations
System disposal is the process of safely and securely removing a system from operation once it is no longer in use. This includes disposing of hardware, data, and software in a way that ensures compliance with regulations and environmental safety.
