Traditionally, as DSX frameworks grew, DSX chassis and the jumper rings associated
Description with them were added one by one. Existing cross-connect jumpers had to be fed into
the new jumper rings as the new chassis were installed. Jumper movement in any one
direction was often restricted since jumper rings were not present at unequipped chassis
positions. If jumpers were pulled too tightly across unequipped positions, feeding them
into new rings was difficult if not impossible. Also, jumpers may have cut across corners
as they transitioned from vertical to horizontal wireways.
To solve these problems and greatly ease the process of growing a DSX lineup, ADC
offers skeleton bays, preassembled with all cable and jumper management, but no
chassis or modules. Bay spacers, end guards and other miscellaneous hardware are
ordered as required. Pre-provisioning all cable management ensures that existing
jumpers need never be touched when chassis are added to the bay. Jumper routing is
never restricted since all wireways are pre-provisioned.
DSX cross-connect system configurations are available for 7' (2.14 m) office environ-
ments. Configurations for 9' (2.75 m) and 11.6' (3.51 m) offices are available upon
request.
A SMALL system (12" [30.48 cm] deep) is designed for offices with limited capacity. A
LARGE (15" [38.1 cm] deep) system is designed with additional jumper capacity for
lineups with greater growth potential; the additional 3" (7.62 cm) of depth provides over
50% additional capacity in the upper and lower jumper troughs.
• Unequal flange type bays are recommended to provide vertical cable ducts for IN/OUT cables.
• Rack spaces over the 7' (2.14 m) high level are generally not used. If taller racks are used, install DSX modules
up to the 7' (2.14 m) level, leaving area above this level vacant. This eliminates the need for ladders for
monitoring circuits.
• Rack spacers on each side of the bay should be provided to allow for adequate room for IN/OUT cables.
• Fuse panels should be placed in the uppermost part of the bay, below horizontal wireways for both rear and
front cross-connects.
• The maintenance bay is typically placed in every third or fourth location of the lineup.
• Cross aisle panels should be provided or space reserved in each bay unless there will never be more than one
lineup.
• An upper and lower horizontal wireway should be provided in each bay for routing cross-connects between
bays in the lineup.
• Horizontal wireways should be at the same height in each bay throughout the lineup.
• Maximum equipment cable length for DS1 signals is 655' (200 m). Limits vary depending on the type of cable
used.
