III. Questions and Answers
1. Enumerate the features of the Moon.
● There is no atmosphere surrounding the moon.
● It doesn’t give out its own light. It reflects sunlight.
● The surface of the Moon is covered with a layer of dust and rocks.
● It has mountains and huge, round pits called craters on its surface.
● The gravity of the moon is only ⅙ th that of the earth.
2. Enlist the reasons why life is not possible on the Moon.
Ans. Life is not possible on the Moon because:
● The Moon has no oxygen and liquid water on it.
There is no protection on the Moon against the strong rays of the Sun as there is no
atmosphere around the Moon.
● Days are extremely hot, and nights are extremely cold on the Moon.
3. Explain the formation of solar and lunar eclipses.
Ans. Solar eclipse:

● When the Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth, the Moon blocks the Sun's light.
● The Moon casts its shadow on the Earth and the people on the shadowed part of the Earth
will not be able to see the Sun for some time.
• When the Sun is partially blocked by the Moon, it is called partial solar eclipse.
● Solar eclipse occurs on a New Moon Day.
Lunar eclipse:

● When the Earth comes in between the Sun and the Moon, the Earth cuts off the light reaching
the Moon from the Sun.
● The Moon turns red during the total lunar eclipse.
● When the Moon is completely under the shadow of the Earth, it is called total lunar eclipse.
● When the Moon is partly under the shadow of the Earth, it is called partial lunar eclipse.
● Lunar eclipse occurs only on a Full Moon Night.
4. Enumerate the uses of artificial satellites.
Ans. The following are some primary uses of artificial satellites:
● Artificial satellites help in forecasting the weather.
● They also help in communication. Eg: T.V, Internet, mobile phones etc.
● They help in navigation of ships and planes.
● They help us in studying the climatic changes.
● They also help us to study space and the other planets.
5. Explain the formation of full moon and new moon phases.
Ans. Full moon phase:
The full moon phase occurs when the Sun and the Moon are located on opposite sides of the Earth
and the face of the Moon visible from the Earth is completely illuminated by the Sun. New moon
phase: The new moon phase occurs when the Moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun and
the face of the Moon visible from the Earth is not illuminated by the Sun. Hence, we see no moon on a
New moon day.
6. Chandrayaan-1 was India's first mission to the moon .List out any two discoveries made
by Chandrayaan-1.
Ans:
• The Chandrayaan-1 mission detected the presence of solid water (ice) on the polar
regions of the lunar surface.
• It gathered evidence that the Moon was once molten.

7. What did Chandrayaan- 3 discover on the moon?

• Chandrayaan-3 is the first mission to investigate the Moon's South Pole.

• The rover of Chandrayaan 3 has discovered the presence of elements like sulphur, iron,
calcium, aluminum, oxygen etc.
• It had measured and analyzed the soil temperature of the moon.

HOTS:( should be attempted by the students)

8. The Earth, even if all life is wiped out, will not be a quiet place. We would hear the waves and
the breeze. But on our closest neighbour Moon, we cannot hear any sound. According to you,
what could be the reason for this?

9. Suppose the moon emits light of its own. Would it still have phases? Justify your answer.
