Term paper outline
1. Introduction/Topic: Within this essay I will be covering the general topic
of religious belief regarding Keely’s conspiracy theories and how they compare. I will argue that there are greater similarities between the two than differences. 2. Thesis Statement: In this paper I will illustrate other approaches to religious belief, Keely’s take on conspiracy theories and how they relate to religious belief, then compare them both to demonstrate how similar conspiracy and religious belief are. 3. Supporting evidence/primary sources: 1. “The Marxist Critique of Religion: A Persisting Ambiguity Download The Marxist Critique of Religion: A Persisting Ambiguity,” Richard Comstock. 1. I will begin by using the article above to present how Karl Marx views religious belief. 2. Specifically, where he thinks religion originated from 3. And how along with is ideal about religion being the “opium of the people” 2. “God as the Ultimate Conspiracy Theory, Download God as the Ultimate Conspiracy Theory,” Brian Keeley. 1. Continuing on with Keely’s viewpoint on religious belief and conspiracy theories together. Specifically, his idea of God as the ultimate conspiracy theory. 2. Using this to set up a comparison of the two approaches to religious belief through adding the contrast of conspiracy and religious belief directly.
3. Franks, B., Bangerter, A., & Bauer, M. W. (2013). Conspiracy
theories as quasi-religious mentality: An integrated account from Cognitive Science, social representations theory, and frame theory. Frontiers in Psychology, 4. https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2013.00424 1. Within this article the authors explore conspiracy theories as quasi-religious mentality- highlighting how conspiracy theory uses the same framework as quasi-religious mentality. 2. They explain conspiracy theories to be used to explain the unexplainable in the same way Keely explains them and religion 3. Use the groundwork of conspiracy theory to support the argument for a basic understanding of both 4. Demonstrate how “CT’s draw on resources employed by religious representation” – how they “stick” due to the having the quasi-religious framework- 4. Objections: 1. Wood, M. J., & Douglas, K. (2018). Are conspiracy theories a surrogate for god? Handbook of Conspiracy Theory and Contemporary Religion, 87–105. https://doi.org/10.1163/9789004382022_006 1. This article explores both sides of similarities and differences of conspiracy theories and religious belief. 2. I will be using the evidence for the contradictions to rebuttal my argument that they’re very similar 3. Specifically, this article provides that have opposite world views, social dimensions, differences in social cohesion 4. So different they cannot be psychologically interchangeable 2. Frenken, M., Bilewicz, M., & Imhoff, R. (2022). On the relation between religiosity and the endorsement of conspiracy theories: The role of political orientation. https://doi.org/10.31234/osf.io/hyt39 1. The authors provide differences being from the social dimensions 2. Different world views that are brought forth in a different way than the previous objection that I will elaborate on 5. Reply to objections:
1. Jasinskaja‐Lahti, I., & Jetten, J. (2019). Unpacking the relationship
between religiosity and conspiracy beliefs in Australia. British Journal of Social Psychology, 58(4), 938–954. https://doi.org/10.1111/bjso.12314 1. I will use this articles finding to direct rebuttal the first objection 2. Specifically, “the finding that we did find that the extent to which religious worldviews were endorsed predicted belief in conspiracy theories. Among believers, the importance attached to their religious worldview was directly associated with higher belief in conspiracy theories and this link was partly mediated by higher anti- intellectualism” 3. Also using the relationship’s that have been found between religiosity and conspiracy theories to add to their similarities and strengthen my argument
2. Bezalel, G. Y. (2019). Conspiracy theories and religion: Reframing
conspiracy theories as bliks. Episteme, 18(4), 674–692. https://doi.org/10.1017/epi.2019.46 1. Bezalel provides how religious belief is part of how we understand the foundations of conspiracy theorizing worldview 2. The use of his worldview argument will deconstruct the objections I have provided 6. Conclusion/Summary: To conclude my paper I will briefly touch on Marx’s assertion off religion, continuing with Keely’s writing over conspiracy theory and religious belief, the take on conspiracy as quasi- religious, the objections and how I respond to those rejections coming back to the argument I presented. Overall concluding my argument on how similar religious beliefs and conspiracy theories are. 1. The conclusion will overall highlight the most important aspects to support how similar the two are.
