DOT PRELIM

1. Polygraphy-It is the scientific method of detecting deception with the use of a polygraph
instrument. This is the new name of LIE DETECTION.
2. Polygraph-It is a scientific diagnostic instrument used to record physiological changes in the
blood pressure, pulse rate, respiration and skin resistance of an examinee under controlled
condition
3. Lie-Any untruthful statement; Falsehood; Anything that deceives or creates false impression;
4. Polygraph-The word Polygraph originated from the Greek word “Poly" which means

"many'" and “graphein” which means to “write or writings”.

5. Subject -is any person who undergoes a polygraph examination.


6. Polygraph Examination- a process that encompasses all activities that take place between a
polygraph examiner and an examinee during a specific series of interactions.
7. Third degree- is a euphemism for torture (inflicting of pain, physical or mental, to extract
confessions or statements).
8. Trial by Ordeal -refers to the oldest form of crime detection done by subjecting a subject to an
obstacle or trial and sometimes even involving third degree.
9. Ordeal- was derived from the Medieval Latin word "Dei Indicum” which means "a miraculous
decision".
10. Cesare Lombroso- he relates the use of hydrosphygmograph during interrogation of suspects.
11. Angelo Mosso- He made use of an instrument called a plethysmograph in his research on
emotion and fear and its influence on the heart and respiration
12. Dr. William M. Marston- in 1915 was credited as the creator of the systolic blood-pressure test
used in an attempt to detect deception during questioning.
13. John A. Larson- Cardio-Pneumo Psychogram was Larson's first instrument which was borrowed
from Dr. Robert Jessel and was invented by Earl Bryant;
14. Leonard Keeler- He developed metal bellows and kymograph that pulled a chart paper at a
constant speed under recording pens from a roll of chart located inside the instrument
15. Vittorio Benussi- where he described how he recorded the subject's breathing pattern using a
Marey Pneumograph in which he noted the changes in inspiration-expiration ratio during
deception:
16. AYUR-VEDA - “Hindu book of health and science” The earliest known reference of the methods
for detecting deception.
17. Otto S. Veraguth-He is said to be the first person to use the tern Psychogalvanic Reflex. Veraguth
was the first scientist to use the word association test with galvano- meters;
18. Blood Pressure Cuff- attached to the upper right arm of the subject, above branchial artery.
19. Sphygmanometer - used to indicate the amount of air pressure inflated to the system, usually
about 60mm of mercury for male subject.
20. Air Pump- is designed to supply air to the adult.
