Lesson 5: Dashboarding

Overview
The objective of this exercise is to apply dashboarding principles and Excel
visualization techniques in real-time scenarios. By working through realistic
scenarios and problems, participants can practically engage with classroom
concepts in a context that mimics actual professional tasks.

Instructions
1. Work on the tasks provided individually or within your group
2. Divide your time evenly among the questions for efficient problem-solving
3. Share ideas and solutions actively in the live class
4. Use the official Microsoft Excel documentation and other online resources
for better understanding

Task
1. Create Appropriate Charts to Visualize Sales Performance:
Identify the key metrics to include and the types of Excel charts that might be
suitable, and any interactive elements that could enhance user engagement.

2. Design a Dashboard Concept:

You are tasked with creating a dashboard to visualize the performance of a
sales team over the past quarter. To achieve this, sketch a concept for the
dashboard, considering the principles of good dashboard design that were
covered in the session.

DISCLAIMER: The participants are NOT expected to create the dashboard using the
Excel software. This exercise is meant to encourage participants to think about the
dashboard design elements like layout, chart selection, etc.
Discussion Questions (Optional)
If time permits, answer the following questions:

a. What are some best practices in dashboard design that you have observed in
today's exercise? How do these practices contribute to the effectiveness of a
dashboard in communicating key information?
b. Considering the different types of charts and graphs used in your
dashboards, discuss the reasons behind your choice of visuals for specific
metrics. How do different types of charts (like bar charts, line graphs, and pie
charts) affect the interpretation of data?
