Learning About Seeds

With Keedanu and Destiny

What Is a Seed?

A seed is the embryonic stage of the plant life cyclic. You could think of the seed
as your mummy’s belly!
What is the purpose of Seeds?

To grow into new plants can carry forward the genetic legacy of the parent plant.
What did Adam and Eve Eat

The woman said to the serpent,

“We may eat fruit from the trees
in the garden. Genesis 3: 2
Parts of a seed

Tesla: It is the outer coat of the seed that protects the embryonic plant.

Micropyle: It is a hole that allows water to enter embryo and start germination.

Cotyledon: In some plants, provides a source of food for the seedling.

Radicle: the first root of our seedling.

Epicotyl: Extends our baby leaves above the soil.

How are Seeds Scattered?

There are 4 ways:

Gravity

Wind

Water

Animals
Gravity

Plants can disperse seeds by

dropping fruits onto the ground.
If the fruit holding the seeds is
hard and round, for example, a
pine cone, it can roll far away.
Plants That Disperse WIth Gravity Are

Pine Tree Cedars Spruce

Wind

Wind is strong and everywhere. So

some plants scatter their seeds with
the wind by making seeds with feather
like attachments.
Examples of Wind Dispersal

Dandelions Milkweed
Water

Many aquatic and coastal plants

have seed adapted for water travel.
That way these plants can travel
across islands and continents.

Animals

Many plants manipulate animals into spreading

their seeds for them. The most common way is by
encasing the seed inside a juicy fruit. Think of how
many mangos you have tossed around. Or think
about all the acorns squirrels may plant. A trickier
method is producing fruits with spikes and
prickles that attach to animals.
