Meiosis
Meiosis is a special type of cell division of germ cells in sexually-reproducing organisms that produces
the gametes, the sperm or egg cells. It involves two rounds of division that ultimately result in four cells,
each with only one copy of each chromosome (haploid).
Meiosis is divided into two successive cell divisions. Meiosis I halves the number of chromosomes from
deploid to haploid number. This stage meiosis is also called a reductional division. Meiosis II is very
similar to mitosis, thus called equational division.
Meiosis I and Meiosis II are subdivided into four stages:
Meiosis I
- Prophase I
- Metaphase I
- Anaphase I
- Telophase I
Meiosis II
- Prophase II
- Metaphase II
- Anaphase II
- Telophase II
Meiosis is the main event involved in the process of gamete formation called gametogenesis.
