In the kind of crops grown and facilities available, Palampur would resemble a village of the western part of the state of Uttar
Pradesh. All land is cultivated in Palampur. No land is left idle. During the rainy season (kharif) farmers grow jowar and bajra.
These plants are used as cattle feed. It is followed by cultivation of potatoes between October and December. In the winter
season (rabi), fields are sown with wheat. From the wheat produced, farmers keep enough wheat for the family’s consumption
and sell the surplus wheat at the market at Raiganj. A part of the land area is also devoted to sugarcane which is harvested once
every year. Sugarcane, in its raw form, or as jaggery, is sold to traders in Shahpur.

20. Major features of the Green Revolution in India were-
i. The Green Revolution was introduced in the states of Punjab,Haryana,and Uttar Pradesh by using HighYielding
Varieties (HYV) of seeds which promised to produce much greater amount of grain from a single plant.
ii. Advanced technology, chemical fertilisers, pesticides and a well-developed system of irrigation was used.
iii. This revolution helped India by making her self-sufficient in the terms of food production.
iv. This also increased the income of the farmers and country as well.
v. However, due to overuse of chemicals in some places the Green Revolution was associated with loss of soil
fertility and the water table which reduced due to continuous use of groundwater.
vi. The Green Revolution, farming was done using new methods of technology, mechanised equipment, HYV seeds, use
of tube-wells and canals for irrigation and use of fertilzers and insecticides. In the traditional method,primitive
methods of cultivation,manure and wells or tanks are used for irrigation.

Unemployment is said to exist when people who are willing to work at the going wages cannot find jobs. The workforce
population includes people from 15 years to 59 years. In case of India, we have unemployment in rural and urban areas.
However, the nature of unemployment differs in rural and urban areas. In the case of rural areas, there is seasonal and disguised
unemployment. Urban areas have mostly educated unemployment. Seasonal unemployment happens when people are not able
to find jobs during some months of the year. People dependant upon agriculture usually face such kind of problem. There are
certain busy seasons when sowing, harvesting, weeding and threshing are done. Certain months do not provide much work to
the people dependant on agriculture. In case of disguised unemployment people appear to be employed. They have an
agricultural plot where they find work. This usually happens among family members engaged in agricultural activity. The work
requires the service of five people but engages eight people. Three people are extra. These three people also work in the same
plot as the others. The contribution made by the three extra people does not add to the contribution made by the five people. If
three people are removed the productivity of the field will not decline. The field requires the service of five people and the three
extra people are disguised as unemployed. In case of urban areas educated unemployment has become a common phenomenon.
Many youths with matriculation, graduation and post-graduation degrees are not able to find a job.
