TERM END EXAMINATIONS (TEE) – December 2024– January 2025

Interim Semester
Programme : B.Tech Semester :
2024-25
Course Title : Probability, Statistics, and Reliability Course Code : MAT3003
Date : January 8, 2025 Slot : A14+D11+D12
Time : 1½ hours Max. Marks : 50
Answer ALL the Questions
Q. No. Question Description Marks

PART - A (30 Marks)

1 (a) A firm manufactures PVC pipes in three plants viz, 𝑋, 𝑌 and Z. The daily 10
production volumes from the three firms X, Y and Z are respectively 2000 units,
3000 units and 5000 units. It is known from the past experience that 3% of the
output from plant X, 4% from plant Y and 2% from plant Z are defective. A pipe
is selected at random from a day’s total production.

(i) find the probability that the selected pipe is a defective one.

(ii) if the selected pipe is a defective, then what is the probability that it was
produced by plant Y?

OR
(b) Kevin uses his mobile phone for 𝑋 minutes each day. 𝑋 is a random variable 10
which may be modelled by a normal distribution with mean 28 minutes and
standard deviation 8 minutes.
(a) Find the probability that on a particular day Kevin uses his mobile phone
for.
(i) Less than 30 minutes
(ii) Between 10 and 20 minutes.
(b) Calculate an interval, symmetrical about 28 minutes. within which 𝑋
will lie on 80% of days.

2 (a) The joint density function of random variable 𝑋 and 𝑌 is given by 10

𝑒 −𝑥−𝑦 ; 𝑥 ≥ 0, 𝑦 ≥ 0
𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = {
0 ; 𝑒𝑙𝑠𝑒𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒
Find 𝑃(𝑋 < 𝑌⁄𝑋 < 2𝑌).
OR
(b) A gambler plays a game that involves throwing 3 dice in a succession of trials. 10
His winnings are directly proportional to the number of sixes recorded. If the dice
are fair, what is the probability distribution that governs the outcome of each
throw?
The frequencies of the sixes observed in 100 trials are recorded, together with
their expected values, in the following table

Number of sixes Expected Count Observed Count
0 58 47
1 34.5 35
2 7 15
3 0.5 3
You are asked to assess whether it is likely that the dice have been unfairly
weighted, using a chi-square test of goodness of fit.
3 (a) An insurance agent has claimed that the average age of policy holder who insure 10
through him is less than the average for all agents which is 30.5 years. A random
sample of 100 policy holders who had insured through him gave the following
age distribution.
Age last birthday 16-20 21-25 26-30 31-35 36-40
(years)
Number of persons 12 22 20 30 16
insured
Calculate the arithmetic mean and standard deviation of this distribution and use
these values to test his claim at 1% level of significance
OR
(b) Calculate the reliability of the system. 10

PART - B (20 Marks)

4 Calculate the two regression equations of 𝑋 on 𝑌 and 𝑌 on 𝑋 from the data 10
given below taking deviations from a actual means of X and Y.

Estimate the likely demand when the price is Rs.20.
5 In an experiment to determine the effect of nutrition on the attention spans of 10
elementary school students, a group of 15 students were randomly assigned to
each of three meal plans. Their attention spans (in minutes) were recorded during
a morning reading period and are shown as
