Details:

On 24th October 2024, the students of Jeppiaar College of Arts and Science had the opportunity
to visit Carborundum Universal Limited (CUMI) at its Sriperumbudur facility. The primary
objective of the visit was to provide students with practical exposure to the manufacturing
processes, product portfolio, and operational strategies of a leading industrial abrasives
manufacturer.

About:

Carborundum Universal Limited (CUMI), part of the Murugappa Group, is a leading manufacturer
of abrasives, ceramics, and electro-minerals. Established in 1954, CUMI specializes in producing
high-quality products like bonded
and coated abrasives, super
abrasives, and industrial ceramics.
Its Sriperumbudur facility focuses
on coated abrasives such as
sandpaper and belts, widely used in
industries like automotive and
construction. With a global
presence in over 50 countries and a strong focus on innovation and quality, CUMI is a trusted
name in industrial material solutions.

Industrial Visit :

During the visit, students were introduced to the step-by-step process of making coated abrasives.
It begins with the selection and preparation of a backing material, such as paper or fabric, which
is treated to enhance its durability. A layer of adhesive is then uniformly applied to the backing,
forming the base for binding abrasive grains. These grains, often made of materials like aluminium
oxide or silicon carbide, are carefully graded for consistency and deposited onto the adhesive-
coated backing. After this, the material
undergoes a drying process to solidify the bond,
followed by the application of a second adhesive
layer for reinforcement. The material is then
heat-treated under controlled conditions to
ensure strength and durability before being cut
and shaped into final products like sheets, rolls, or belts, tailored to customer requirements.

The visit also provided insights into CUMI’s diverse product portfolio and its efficient operational
model. Approximately 75% of the facility's production focuses on sheet-type abrasives, which
cater to high market demand. Additionally, the company operates with a commendable profit
margin of 18%, showcasing its effective cost management and strategic market positioning.
Students also learned about the industrial applications of coated abrasives in sectors like
automotive, construction, and manufacturing.

The industrial visit to

CUMI’s Sriperumbudur
facility was an enriching
experience for the students.
It provided them with an
opportunity to witness
firsthand the intricate
processes involved in the
manufacturing of coated
abrasives, from raw material
preparation to the production of final products. This practical exposure helped bridge the gap
between theoretical knowledge and real-world industrial practices, deepening their understanding
of manufacturing operations.
The visit also offered valuable insights into critical aspects of industrial management, such as
production planning, quality control measures, efficiency optimization, and profitability strategies.
Observing the emphasis on precision, consistency, and adherence to high-quality standards gave
students a better appreciation of the challenges and demands of industrial production. Furthermore,
the interaction with professionals at the facility allowed students to learn about the importance of
innovation, teamwork, and strategic decision-making in a competitive market.

Overall, the visit was instrumental in enhancing the students' comprehension of the manufacturing
sector and its key operational principles. It inspired them to think about how theoretical concepts
can be effectively applied in practical scenarios, thus equipping them with a stronger foundation
for their future endeavours.
