Introduction

Shanele: A pleasant morning to everyone, we are group 3 and ready to present.

So, have you ever wondered that since the ‘Love in the Cornhusks’ story is
written by Aida Rivera Ford, a Filipino, it is no question that it would contain hints
and bits of Filipino values in it? If so, we are here to feed your curiosity with our
observations and answers.

(2nd Slide)
Shanele: Tinang/Constantina Tirol and her love for family. Where this value is
present in the last part of the story;

“Tinang started violently and remembered her child. It lay motionless on the mat
of husk. With a shriek, she grabbed it wildly and hugged it close. The baby
awoke from its sleep and cried lustily. Ave Maria Santisima. Do not punish me,
she prayed, searching the baby’s skin for marks. Among the cornhusks, the
letter fell unnoticed.”

Shaira: This can also be interpreted as an ultimate sacrifice as she

disregarded her past and chose her family. But that’s not the only thing she
has.

Himeka: Discipline is also another value that you can observe and see in her, it
is obvious in the same dialogue as we have shown. Though full of temptation to
leave for her lover, Amado, she still stood strong and did not give in.

(3rd Slide)
Ethan/Himeka: Now moving on to Señora and her welcoming kindness or
hospitality, which can be depicted in her energetic lines and sometimes
narratives like;

“The Señora readily assented and said she would provide the baptismal clothes
and the fee for the priest.”

Dave/Shanele: It shows her true intentions and personality which in conclusion,

finds everyone just equal even if she is a wealthy individual.
(4th Slide)
Ivan/Shanele: Last but not the least, Amado. A man with perseverance and
hard work, you can say so as those are mentioned plenty of times;
One— “Ay, he is always losing his temper over the tractor drivers. It is not the
way it was when Amado was here. You remember what a good driver he was.”

And two— “Once he told her he would study in the city night schools and take up
mechanical engineering someday.”

Ivan/Shanele: While this one it was obvious that despite not being well-of, he still
dreamt big and believed in himself.

(5th Slide)
Shaira: But that’s not even the end. There are also values that all 3 of them
shared— Religious adherence and Multilingualism/Education. With narrations
like;

“Finally, Tinang brought up, haltingly, with phrases like “if it will not offend you”
and “if you are not too busy” the purpose of her visit—which was to ask Señora
to be a madrina in baptism.”
as well as,

“Before she went away to work, she had gone to school and had reached
sixth grade.”

And even the letter of Amado itself can be an example too.

Shanele: All of these have 2 values present in them, religious adherence

because the Spaniards have heavily influenced us as we were colonized and
they brought Catholicism here. And of course multilingualism or education
because of the Americans that pushed us to learn not only the English language
but a better education in general, which greatly influenced us too.

Outro
Shanele: Thank you for staying tuned and hopefully enough you learned
something from this presentation. Once again, thank you, and have a great day
ahead!
