A sudden,
catastrophic event that
causes significant
disruption, destruction,
and distress, often
overwhelming local
resources and requiring
external assistance.

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
and MANAGEMENT
Disaster preparedness is like having a
checklist before chaos hits—think of it as
getting ready for the storm. Disaster
management, on the other hand, is how
we handle things during and after the
storm, executing the plan we made.

TYPES OF DISASTER

Disaster can be categorized into two types: natural and man-

made. NATURAL DISASTERS arise from the occurrence of
natural hazards which bring negative impact on humans and their
environment. MA N - MADE DISASTERS, on the contrary, result
from drastic human activities.

MAN-MADE

NATURAL
NATURAL DISASTERS EXAMPLES
01 earthquakes
landslides
Geophysical volcanic activities
tsunamis

Hydrological 02 avalanches & floods

03 wildfires
Climatological extreme temperatures
drought

Meteorological 04 typhoons & wave surges

Man-made DISASTERS EXAMPLES

Industrial accidents, 01 house/building fires

conventional warfare
nuclear incidents, terrorism, explosions
and other disasters resulting collapsed building
from human actions. chemical pollution
chemical poisoning

Earthquake is a sudden shaking of the
ground caused by the movement of tectonic
plates beneath the Earth's surface.

The place where the

earthquakes originate is called
the focus (hypocenter), and the
place where it occurs in the
earth’s surface is called the
epicenter.
CAUSES MEASUREMENTS
• Magnitude
• Tectonic activity measure of the energy
released, usually expressed
• Volcanic activity on the Richter scale
• Other causes are • Intensity

formations, Intensity Scale, describes the

In the exothermic chemical process of burning,
fire is the rapid oxidation of a substance that results
in the release of heat, light, and different reaction
products.

Three (3) components react

chemically to form fire; known
as the fire triangle.
To start a fire, all three
components are required:
oxygen, heat, and fuel.
A fire extinguisher is an active fire
protection device used to extinguish or control
small fires, often in emergency situations. It is
not intended for use on an out-of-control fire.

CAUSES PREVENTION

The top fire causes include: safety is to make sure a fire
doesn’t break out in the first
place.
• Cooking (49%) • Check all electrical
• Open Flame (10%) appliances, cords, and
• Heating (9%) outlets.
• Incendiary/Arson (8%) • Be careful in the kitchen
• Smoking (4%) Beware of Cigarettes
• Keep fire extinguishers handy

FLOOD
• Flash flood
• Inundation flood
Tropical cyclones, often known as typhoons or
hurricanes, are powerful circular storms with low
air pressure, strong winds, and heavy rain that
develop over warm tropical oceans.

Warm water is the primary factor; a

typhoon won't form if there isn't
enough water available at the
correct temperature. The amount of
water is the second factor; once the
typhoon has grown, it must be fed
constantly.
