Principles of Sterility

Principle Number 1: Only sterile items are used within the sterile field.

Principle Number 2: Sterile persons are gown and gloved.

Principle Number 3: Tables are only sterile at Table Level

Principle Number 4: Sterile Persons Touch ONLY Sterile Items while


Unsterile OR Personnel Touch Only Unsterile Items

Principle Number 5: Unsterile persons avoid reaching over sterile field and
sterile persons avoid touching or leaning over an unsterile area.

Principle Number 6: Edges of anything that encloses sterile contents are


considered unsterile.

Principle Number 7: Sterile field is set-up just before a surgical procedure.

Principle Number 8: Sterile areas are continuously kept in view.

Principle Number 9: Sterile persons keep well within sterile area.

Principle Number 10: Sterile persons keep in contact with sterile areas to
minimum.

Principle Number 11: Unsterile persons avoid sterile areas.

Principle Number 12: Destruction of integrity of microbial barriers result in


contamination
Principle Number 13: Microorganisms must be kept to irreducible
minimum.

ZDSMC | Surgical Ward

 Review common meds. in the area, indicate its effects in the human
body and the part that needs closed monitoring.

ZDSMC | OR

 Procedures
-Open Gloving
-Gowning
-Proper Handling and Passing of surgical instruments, know the
rationale of each.
 Following names of Nursing Students are done through draw lots
 Review catheterization
 Review or memorize surgical instruments
-functions
-knowing the needed number of instruments (how many) and its
arrangements depending on the surgical procedure to be done.
 Study pre-op (actual scenario: another nursing student to be assign),
intraop, and post-op assessments
 Memorize 13 Principles of Sterility (by heart)
 Bring all the necessary materials

Rules

1. Wear clean & complete white RLE uniform with clean white shoes for
coming in and out of the hospital

2. Girls fix hair w/net & minimal makeup; Boys well trimmed hair w/ gel

3. No colored & printed undergarments (use white or skintone)

4. Nails must be short and no nailpolish

5. You should enter OR complex 30 minutes before the schedule time

6. In OR, late is considered ABSENT and is equivalent to 3 days extension


7. You will be excused for absent if you have illness (present a Medical
certificate the following day), death and emergency situations happen with
your immediate family members only.

8. An excused absence is equivalent to one day extension

9. If you use your influence to excuse yourself for being late or absent, we
will not continue to go inside the OR, and we will proceed to sche the rest of
the skills lab for so better be fair with vour classmates and follow the rules

10. All communications in Group Chat, NO DIRECT MESSAGES.

11. STRICTLY NO CELLPHONE ALLOWED

12. Respect and Courtesy is a must to ALL hospital employees

13. No exaggerated attitude, act accordingly

14. One day extension each demerit/lacking of materials (No excuse)

2. Ballpens (black, blue & red) not sign pens

3. Printed Index card for cases

4. Yellow pad

5. Manila paper

6. Jacket with a garter on the sleeves

7. Pencil

8. Checklist Scrub and Circulating Nurse

9. Thermometer

10. Clean gloves #4 pairs per shift

11. Small pocket notebook w/ premium quality (you will copy all the patient’s
data including Pre & post op Dx)
12. Ballpen Black

13. Bandage scissors

Note

1. There’s a possibility you will be a scrub/circulating nurse on the same day,


so bring all the materials for both roles

2. Read before you ask

In your small notebook write the following and memorize:

1. Nurse’s Prayer

2. Short personal prayer before surgery

3. Vision & mission of JHCSC

4. Vision & mission of affiliates

5. ZDSMC OR/PACU Department Organizational Chart

6. Instruments per operation

7. Waste disposal color

8. Board for instruments

9. Instrument on mayo table

10. Functions of a Scrub nurse

11. Functions of a Circulating nurse

12. Patient’s data record (10 copies)

When in waiting area

1. Sutures (Vicryl-1pc, Chromic-1pc) (1 cutting & 1 taper needle)

2. Blades no. 10 & no. 11

3. Cotton balls in a sterilized container


When you enter inside OR:

Scrub Nurse:

1. Clean Scrub suit with socks

2. Clean Slippers (1 blue & 1 red)

3. Bonnet for OR

4. Clean White lab gown

5. Sterile gloves with premium quality of your size #4 pairs per shift

6. Memorize personal prayer before surgery

Circulating Nurse:

1. Clean Scrub suit with socks

2. Clean Slippers (1 blue & 1 red)

3. Bonnet for OR

4. Clean White lab gown

5. White board marker

6. Acetone

7. BP app

8. Thermometer
