What is DNA?
● DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), the molecule dictating growth
and development in all living organisms has a
double-stranded helical structure upheld by complementary
base pairs.
● This genetic code, comprising genes, determines distinct
characteristics within organisms.
● Its discovery was unveiled in 1953 by James Watson and
Francis Crick with credit to Rosalind Franklin.
Basic Units

● The basic units of DNA are nucleotides.


● These nucleotides consist of a deoxyribose
sugar, phosphate and base.
The structure of DNA

● DNA is a chemical made up of two long strands, arranged in a spiral. This is


the double-helix structure.
● DNA carries genetic information -
the genetic code.
● DNA is made up of four base pairs

Interesting Facts
There are over three billion different DNA
base pairs in each person.
DNA is present in the nucleus of almost
every cell in your body. In fact, there are
around two metres of DNA packed into each
nucleus of your body cells.
All life on Earth has the same genetic code.
The same four letters make up bacteria,
fungi, animals - including humans -, plants
and single-celled protists.
