How ancient Egyptians helped shape the world
Egypt is famous for its pyramids, but ancient Egyptians were also great inventors.
Did you know that the ancient Egyptians invented the solar calendar? They made a calendar with 365 days,
12 months and three seasons. It had one problem: it didn’t include a leap year (February with 29 days) and so it
became incorrect.
Ancient Egyptians also had clocks – two types! A water clock measured time by how fast water filled or
emptied a container so they could tell the time at night. The second clock was a shadow clock where a pillar
made a shadow from the sunlight. As the position of the sun changed, the shadow moved around the clock.
In fact, a miniature version of this clock was the first clock that you could take from one place to another
with you! But you couldn’t wear it on your wrist, because it was over 30 cm long.
The ancient Egyptians were one of the first cultures that moved from writing in pictures to using an alphabet.
They used to write on papyrus, a thick paper made from plants. In 2012, archaeologists found papyrus
documents about the building of the pyramids. These are the oldest papyrus documents ever discovered.
Papyrus was cheap and easy to produce – they also used it to make tables, clothes and even shoes.
The ancient Egyptians were quite advanced in their knowledge of maths and geometry. Their knowledge
helped them to build the pyramids.
1 The Egyptian solar calendar included:
A twelve seasons.
B more than 365 days.
C February with 29 days.
D the same number of months as now.

2 What is true about the small version of the shadow clock?

A People thought it was too long.
B People could take it everywhere.
C People wore it on their hands.
D People could use it at night.

3 Ancient Egyptians used papyrus:

A to make shadow clocks.
B to write on other things.
C to build the pyramids.
D to make everyday objects.

4 The ancient Egyptians were one of the first societies that:

A taught themselves geometry.
B used cheap building materials.
C discovered old papyrus documents.
D used an alphabet to communicate.

5 This text is about:

A one of the first clocks in the world.
B the way in which Egyptians built the pyramids.
C the inventions of the ancient Egyptians.
D how the Egyptians used papyrus.
