SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING, ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT

ELECTRICAL DRIVES (EE541) ASSIGNMENT 2
Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions in groups of four students per group.
2. The due date is 12th March 2021.
3. Submit your solutions as a PDF emailed to [email protected]
4. No other method of submission will be accepted, and no submissions sent after the
deadline will be marked.

A separately-excited DC motor with a lap wound armature has the following parameters:
Parameter Value
Rated power 15 kW
Rated armature voltage 220 V
Number of poles 8
Armature winding resistance 0.5 Ω
Armature winding inductance 0.003 H
Coefficient of friction 0.2 Nm/(rad/s)
Moment of inertia 0.05 kgm2
Number of armature conductors 1500
Useful flux per pole 12 mWb

The motor is started from rest with no mechanical load attached to its shaft. After 5 s a
mechanical load of 200 Nm is applied to the shaft of the motor.
(a) From first principles derive the transfer function of the response of the motor speed
to a change in applied armature terminal voltage.
(b) Using the transfer function derived in part (a), determine the steady-state no-load
speed of the motor.
(c) Derive the transfer function of the response of the motor speed to a change in
mechanical load.
(d) Using the transfer function in part (c) determine the new steady-state speed after
application of the mechanical load at t = 5 s.
(e) Using a Matlab script write code to simulate the conditions in part (a) and part (c).
Display your results in graphical form and from the graphs determine the no-load

steady-state speed and the steady-state speed after application of the mechanical
load. [The code used to answer this question should be included in your solution]
(f) Using Simulink blocks, model the motor drive described above and display the speed
changes in graphical form. From the graphs determine the no-load steady state speed
and the steady state speed after application of the mechanical load. [The Simulink
block diagram should be included in your solution]
(g) Using SimPowerSystems (SimScape) blocks model the motor drive described above
and display the speed changes in graphical form. From the graphs determine the no-
load steady state speed and the steady state speed after application of the mechanical
load. [The block diagram used to answer the question should be included in your
solution].
(h) Compare your solutions obtained using hand calculations, Matlab code, Simulink
blocks and SimScape models. If there are any discrepancies in the results clearly
account for them.
