EE541 TUTORIAL QUESTIONS – DC DRIVES

1. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of DC drives.

2. Starting with the dynamic equivalent circuit and the mechanical model of the machine, derive
the transfer function block diagram model of each of the following types of DC machines.

(a) Separately-excited DC motor.

(b) Shunt-wound DC motor.
(c) Series-wound DC motor.
(d) Permanent magnet DC motor.
Comment on the control complexity for each type of DC motor above.

3. A separately excited DC motor has the following parameters: 𝑅𝑎 = 0.5𝛺; 𝐿𝑎 = 0.003𝐻;

𝐾𝜙 = 0.8 𝑉⁄𝑟𝑎𝑑⁄𝑠; 𝐽 = 0.0167𝑘𝑔𝑚2 ; 𝐵 = 0.01 𝑁𝑚⁄𝑟𝑎𝑑⁄𝑠 and a rated voltage of 220 V.
(a) If the motor is started directly from a 220 V source, on no-load find the starting speed
response and the time taken to reach a speed of 100 rad/s. Derive all equations used.
(b) Derive the steady-state speed-torque characteristic of the motor.
(c) If the motor drives a load with a load torque of 100 Nm, determine the steady-state speed
of the motor.

4. A DC drive consists of a single-phase thyristor converter supplied from a 240 V, 50 Hz supply.

The drive motor is a separately excited DC motor with a rated voltage of 220 V, armature
winding resistance of 0.4 Ω, armature inductance of 10 mH, a flux constant of 1 V/rad/s.
(a) Calculate the no-load speed of the motor.
(b) What should be the firing angle of the thyristors to run the motor on half of its no-load
speed?
(c) At a certain load, the motor draws a current of 20 A and runs at three-quarters of its rated
speed. Calculate the thyristor firing angle, and the developed torque at this load.

5. A separately excited dc motor has a voltage constant of 0.52 V/rpm and a torque constant of
2.3Nm/A, and is supplied from a three-phase thyristor bridge rectifier with an input voltage
of 400 V.
(a) Sketch a well-labelled diagram of the drive system described above.
(b) Sketch the waveforms for the rectifier input voltage, armature terminal voltage, armature
current, and input current in phase-a for an arbitrary firing angle 𝛼. Assume the armature
current is constant.
(c) Calculate the thyristor firing angle if the motor is rotating at 600rpm.
(d) Calculate the developed torque at 600rpm if the armature current is 10A.
(e) What would be the motor speed if the firing angle is 0°?
(f) What are the limitations of a single-phase thyristor converter dc motor drive?

6. Sketch a control block diagram for a full-bridge DC to Dc converter based DC drive. The
control scheme consists of an outer speed control loop and an inner current control loop, both
implemented using PI controllers. The motor is a separately excited DC motor and the field is
assumed to be constant.
7. What is the main advantage of full-bridge DC to DC converter drives?
