ASS1-Cal1-S241-Set12
ASS1-Cal1-S241-Set12
ASSIGNMENT 1
• Includes 8 exercises
• Students MUST write:
Ex (number)… SET 1 (or 2) before a
solution of each exercise.
• Example: Ex 64 SET1.
ASSIGNMENT 1 - Cal1 - Semester 241
SET 2
• Remember to write: Your full name, ID, and YOUR Class (TUE or SAT class) at the TOP of the first
page of your solutions.
• Students write solutions in A4 papers and fix them together by a stapler. Papers not of right size or not
fixed, no ID, no class (TUE or SAT): -3 points.
• Way of submission: Put your ASS1 (solutions) in the mailbox of Prof. Dinh, in front of the room O2.610
(6th floor of A2).
• Students have to work independently. Any of two exercises of 2 students have the same solutions, both
will get zero mark (for the whole assignment 1).
• DO NOT use pencils to write your solutions (However, you can use pens with different colors to
emphasize some parts if you like).
Questions of SET 2
√
S2-Question 1. Write the equation of the tangent line to the curve x2/3 + y2/3 = 4 at the point (3 3, 1).
S2-Question 2. A runner exercises on a straight road. His displacement (in kilometers) relative to an
origin O is s(t) = 2t 3 − 9t 2 + 12t, 0 ≤ t ≤ 3, where time t is measured in hours.
(B) Find the distance that the runner covered during the interval [0, 3].
S2-Question 3. Suppose that f is continuous on [5, 10] and the equation f (x) = 4 has only two solutions
x = 5 and x = 9 in [5, 10]. If f (6) = 3. Compare f (8) and 4. Explain in detail your answer.
S2-Question 4. Consider the curve C with the equation: x2 y2 + xy = 2. Write the equations of the tangent
line to C at the points (1, 1) and (−1, −1).
S2-Question 5. Let
1
x + a if x < −1
f (x) = x if − 1 ≤ x ≤ 1
2
(x − b) + 1 if x > 1,
where a and b are constants.
(a) Find all the values of a and b such that f (x) is continuous at x = −1 and x = 1.
(b) With a and b found in part (a), is f (x) differentiable at x = 1? Explain your answer.

S2-Question 6. Find the linear approximation of the function y = 2 + sin x near x0 = 0.
S2-Question 7. Let x4 + y4 = 16 and consider y as a function of x. Use the implicit differentiation to find
y00
(A) Equation (1) has at least one solution on the interval (0, 2)
S2-Question 9. Use the fact that the world population was 6144 millions in 2000 and was 7821 millions
in 2020 to model the population of the world in the first half of the 21th century. Assume that the growth
rate is proportional to the population size. Use the model to estimate the population in 2023. At what rate
is the world population increasing in 2023?
Hint: Measure the time t in years and let t = 0 in the year 2000.
