Dojo Rules and Etiquette

Karate begins and ends with courtesy. We consider our dojo a sacred place to
study martial arts. Please read the following rules and guidelines to familiarize
yourself with them, everyone entering the dojo should follow these rules.
Thank you.

1. Students should bow and say “Oss” when entering or exiting the dojo.
2. Please arrive before class starts. Students should be in uniform and ready to train
at the time the class is scheduled to start. In the event you are late please
acknowledge you are late by waiting in ready position (Yoi) off the mat and only
bow onto the mat when you are invited by the Sensei or instructor.
3. Shoes should be removed upon entry and placed into the shoe cubbies provided.
This is for all persons entering the dojo.
4. Before entering and exiting the dojo mat, students should bow facing the center of
the mat and only step on or off after the bow.
5. On greeting one’s Sensei or training partner one should always bow (rei).
6. When the Sensei or instructor is explaining or demonstrating students should listen
carefully and not talk or leave the mat.
7. When a student wants to show understanding or agreement the response should
be “Oss”.
8. When training with a partner, students should bow simultaneously before and after
training.
9. Folding arms is a sign of disrespect in the dojo so please have your arms at your
sides or behind your back when listening in class.

teach your partner. If you and your partner are having difficulty please get the
attention of your Sensei.

dojo.

begin training.
13. Always make sure your karategi (uniform) is clean and fresh before training.
14. Students should have trimmed and smooth fingernails and toenails to avoid
injury to themselves or to a training partner.
15. If you have to leave class early please inform your instructor before class
starts and upon leaving, please don’t just disappear.

and return quickly. Junior students must ask permission from Sensei or an adult.
Don’t forget to bow.
17. If you are injured during class and can’t finish training, try to stay in the dojo
and bow out with the class when it is over.
