Unit 2.2 Separating mixtures

A. A mixture or Not a Mixture. Look at these materials and identify whether they are a
mixture or not.

salt noodle soup pizza

not a mixture a mixture a mixture

helium gas milk tea pure water

not a mixture a mixture not a mixture

B. Mixtures can be separated in different ways. Choose how to separate the following
mixtures and complete the sentence of the reason.

1. Paper clips can be separated from paper strips

by a magnet. Paper clips are

magnetic but papers are not.

2. A bowl of cereal is a mixture. We can separate

the cereal pieces by hand (hand-picking). We

can separate them into shapes (sizes, colour).

3. To separate sand from gravel, we use a sieve.

Smaller materials like sand can pass

through the sieve but not the bigger gravel.

4. A mixture of pepper and water can be

separated by a filter/filtering. Water can

pass through the tiny holes of the filter paper

but not pepper.

Unit 2.3 Dissolving

A. Soluble or Insoluble. Identify the following materials whether they can be dissolved in
water or not.

food color powder gold dust instant coffee powder

soluble insoluble soluble

flour sand juice powder

insoluble insoluble soluble
B. Grade 2 plans for an experiment to dissolve salt in water, alcohol and oil. They
prepared 20ml of each type of liquid, a teaspoon, 3 teaspoons of salt and a timer.

They labelled the cups as shown below.

1. What are they trying to test?

Which liquid dissolves salt?

2. What TWO things do they need to keep the same?

amount of liquid and amount of salt

3. What ONE thing do they need to change in the test?

type of liquid

4. Why is it not safe to taste the liquids?

some liquids can be poisonous (cause allergy, harmful, dirty)

After the test, Jeremy thought of an

idea. Do you think Jeremy’s idea is
correct? Why?

No, because salt is soluble in water

and vinegar but not in oil. (Most
likely Oliver got confused between
the meaning or the word soluble
from insoluble.)

Soluble - things that dissolve

in a liquid
Insoluble - things that DO NOT
dissolve in a liquid
