UNIT 5 – RESPONSIBILITY

Task 1: Listen and fill in the blank (Unit 5-1, P.88)

This morning I'd like to talk to you about 1. _________, or corporate social responsibility. That is, the 2. _________ that
companies need to be responsible for the economic, social, and environmental impact of their actions. Of course
companies want to make money. There's nothing wrong with that. However, 3. _________ people are asking, at what
cost? What is the cost to us, the 4. _________, and the society we live in? It is this 5. _________between profit and
social responsibility in the corporate world that I want to look at today. Believe it or not, this issue affects everyone
including you 6. _________. We are all happy to buy our 7. _________ more cheaply, but do we stop to think where
they were made, and who made them? Do you know who made your jeans, your shirt, or your 8. _________? There are
over 9. _________children around the world in 10. _________ today. They are working often in dangerous and difficult
11. _________. Some of these children might have 12. _________ the clothes you are wearing right now. How does that
make you feel? Worried? Well, you should be 13. _________, because the fact is, there are companies that show little or
no 14. _________ in social responsibility. They 15. _________ children because they learn quickly and they're cheap.
They don't care about their safety. They don't provide health care. They save money by polluting our rivers and oceans.
Yes, these companies may make their products in countries in the 16. _________. But they are owned and 17.
_________ by companies in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere; countries that claim to have 18. _________of
social and environmental care. What's more, people living in developed countries seem quite happy to 19.
_________these standards when they want to buy products cheaply. But things are changing. 20. _________is becoming
a big issue these days. 21. _________ are starting to take a greater interest in the 22. _________ they buy products
from. More and more 23. _________ are demanding that companies pay their workers 24. _________. As for workers,
they also expect companies to 25. _________ their safety, and perhaps provide 26. _________and other 27. _________.
In addition, 28. _________ are starting to demand that companies reduce the 29. _________they cause. They are
beginning to stop companies 30. _________ in a way that 31. _________ the health of local 32. _________ and the
environment. Thanks to 33. _________ from all of these sources 34. _________, workers, and governments--things are
changing for the better. This brings us to an important part of 35. _________: the question of who is responsible. 36.
_________a company is polluting the environment. Who is responsible? Is it the company itself, or 37. _________that is
to 38. _________ for allowing the pollution? It's not an easy question to answer. Take another example. A 39.
_________clothes company uses 40. _________in a developing country to produce their 41. _________. The local
company employs children in 42. _________. They work for less than a dollar a day, up to sixteen hours a day in dirty
and dangerous 43. _________. Who is responsible this time? Is it the local manufacturer, or the big brand-name
company that buys from them? Or are we responsible, as consumers who are happy to buy the running shoes at a cheap
price? And exactly how can you 44. _________ any company to be responsible? 45. _________will help, and the
negative effect on public opinion of 46. _________... but it's not easy. Nevertheless, some companies are socially
responsible in the way they run their business. We shouldn't forget that. As consumers demand 47. _________, more
companies are trying to improve the lives of their workers and the society they live in. These companies show that profit
and social responsibility can go together. Id like to consider a few important 48. _________now, beginning with the
example of the 49. _________that goes back to 50. _________Britain

Task 3: Listen and Fill in the blanks (CAM 17, test 3 part 2)
Good afternoon. My name’s Mrs Carter and I run the before and after school extended hours 1. _________________. I
hope you’ve had a chance to have a good look around the school and talk to 2 _________________. I know that many of
you are interested in using our childcare service when your child joins the school, and 3. _________________ you
already know something about it, but for those that don’t, I’ll go through the main details now. We offer childcare for
children from the ages of four to eleven both before and after school. I know that many parents who work find this
service 4. _________________. You can leave your child with us safe in the knowledge that they will be extremely well
cared for. We are 5. _________________ to provide care for up to 6. _________________, although we rarely have this
many attending at any one session. I think we generally expect around 50–60 children for the afternoon sessions and
about half that number for the breakfast sessions. Although we currently do have 70 children 7. _________________
with us, not all of these attend every day. It’s ten years since we began offering an extended hours service and we’ve
come a long way during that time. When we first opened, we only had about 20 children attending regularly. We try to
keep our costs as low as we can and we think we provide very good 8. _________________. For the afternoon sessions,
which run from 3.30 until 6 p.m., it’s £7.20. But if you prefer, you can pay for one hour only, which costs 9.
_________________, or two hours which costs 10. _________________. The cost of the childcare includes food and
snacks. They’ll be given breakfast in the morning and in the afternoon, a healthy snack as soon as they finish school. At 5
p.m. children are given something more 11. _________________, such as 12. _________________. Please inform us of
any 13. _________________ that your child might have and we’ll make sure they’re offered a 14. _________________.
As you may know, the childcare service runs through the school holidays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. We offer a really 15.
_________________ and exciting programme to keep the children entertained – we don’t want them to feel as if they
are still at school! It will also feel different because they’ll get the chance to make new friends with children from other
schools – spaces are available for them because a lot of our 16. _________________ children don’t always attend during
the holiday. In the past, parents have asked if children over the age of 11 are allowed to come with their younger
brothers and sisters – but I’m afraid we’re unable to do this because of the type of 17. _________________ we have. So
now let me tell you about some of the activities that your child can do during the afterschool sessions. As well as being
able to use the 18. _________________, computers and the library, there is usually at least one ‘special’ activity that
children can do each day. For example, 19. _________________. We have a 20. _________________ coming in every
Thursday to give a basic introduction to the language through games and songs. She does two sessions: one for the over
8s and one for the younger children. This is the only activity which we have to make an 21 _________________ for – but
it’s well worth it. Once a week the children have the opportunity to do some music. We’re very lucky that one of our
staff is a member of a 22. _________________. On Mondays, she teaches singing and percussion to groups of children.
We do rely on parental support for this, so if any of you sing or play an instrument and would be prepared to help out at
these sessions, we’d be 23. _________________. Painting continues to be one of the most popular activities. To begin
with we weren’t keen on offering this because of the extra 24. _________________ involved, but children kept asking if
they could do some art and so we finally 25. _________________. Art is great for helping the children to relax after
working hard at school all day. Yoga is something that we’ve been meaning to introduce for some time but haven’t been
able to find anyone available to teach it – until now that is. So we’ll see how this goes. Hopefully, children will 26.
_________________ in all sorts of ways from this. Cooking is another popular activity. They make a different sort of
cake, or pizza or bread each week. Although the younger children love doing it, we found that the mess was just too

much, so we’ve decided to 27. _________________ this to the over 8s, as they are better able to 28.
