Christian Character Development
Christian Character Development
Emojis are widely used and loved by many kids today! That’s why, in this Sunday School series, along with the featured
character trait for the week as exemplified by various Biblical characters, special emojis will be used to illustrate the godly
characters which the kids will learn and apply in their lives.
Hook includes different activities to catch the attention of kids leading to the lesson
Book includes Bible Story and Lessons, and guides in delivering the story and/or using the visual aids
Look includes interactive activities to guide kids for self-reflection and application
Took includes Take-Home Worksheets which will involve and guide parents to follow-up lessons to their kids through
various activities. In this way, parents will be actively involved in achieving the lesson objectives.

TRANSITION: In our Sunday School series, along with the featured Bible character for the
week, we will use special emojis to illustrate the godly characters we will learn and apply in
our lives. Today, we will discover what the Word of God— the Bible— says about the
what’s and how’s of developing a godly character.

Have kids open their bibles to the passages mentioned in the lesson. Make sure that as you read the passage, you have your bible in
front of you to remind children that the story you are sharing with them is from the bible and not from any other book.
SOLOMON’S DOWNFALL
Note to Teacher: Use the teaching pictures for the bible story found in Lesson Appendix.
(Teaching Picture 1) Solomon was a young man when his father, King David, told his son, “Be strong, show
yourself a man, and keep the ways of the Lord your God.”
(Teaching Picture 2) When Solomon became King, Solomon saw a vision in which God offered him anything
he desired. If you were in Solomon’s place, what would you ask from God? To have plenty of money? To have
a huge house? To have the latest gadgets? None of those things did Solomon ask! Instead, he asked for
wisdom to govern his people and discern between good and evil. It pleased the Lord that Solomon asked for
wisdom rather than riches or the defeat of his enemies.
(Teaching Picture 3) Because of that, God gave not only wisdom but riches and honor, too to Solomon.
Solomon became the wisest King to live and became a great ruler.
(Teaching Picture 4) However, Solomon lacked one thing— Solomon’s heart did not belong entirely to God. He
knew right from wrong but chose to do what was wrong and evil. He married foreign women who convinced him to
worship false gods and idols, and he succumbed to the weaknesses of covetousness and pride. In the end, 700 wives and
300 concubines were a more powerful force in his life than God, and his kingdom fell to ruin.
This is the reason why Christ-like character matters. It is easy to pretend that you are living a godly life, but God always
knows your heart. God knows when your heart is not obeying Jesus and loving Jesus. That means, even when you go to
Sunday School every Sunday, or even when you have memorized all our memory verses when your heart is not loving
and obeying Jesus, you are not living a pleasing life to God.
God cares about our character because it has eternal value. This is why He makes way for us to grow our
character. None of us is born with a Christ-like character, but we can learn. God gives us opportunities to
choose good behavior and a Christ-like attitude. For example, meeting someone who is a bully can be God’s
way for you to choose to respond with good behavior. Instead of fighting back, you can tell the bully that you
forgive him. Another example has an annoying brother or sister. Instead of quickly losing your temper to
him/her, show patience and offer help to your brother/sister whenever they need it.
GENERAL TRUTH:
GOD GIVES US OPPORTUNITIES TO CHOOSE GOOD BEHAVIOUR AND A CHRIST-LIKE ATTITUDE

(Teaching Picture 1) Deborah was a well-liked judge in Israel. The Israelites would ask her for advice and
settle their disputes by God’s laws.
(Teaching Picture 2) Sisera, the King’s army commander, had 900 iron chariots and ruthlessly oppressed the
Israelites for twenty years.
(Teaching Picture 3) One day, Deborah called for Barak and told him, “This is what the Lord commands you to
do. Gather 10,000 warriors from the tribes of Naphtali and Zebulun at Mount Tabor. I will call Sisera,
commander of the King’s army, along with his chariots and warriors, to the Kishon River. There I will give you
victory over him.
(Teaching Picture 4) Barak replied, ‘I will go, but only if you go with me.’ ‘Very well,’ Deborah replied, ‘I will go
with you. But you will receive no honor in this venture, for the Lord’s victory over Sisera will be at the hands of
a woman.
(Teaching Picture 5) Deborah encouraged, inspired, and courageously led God’s people, and the result was
that they pressed harder against their enemies.
(Teaching Picture 6)Deborah gave the glory to God rather than taking it for herself. After her obedient service
to God, her people had peace for 40 years
Deborah was a servant-leader. When God told her to work with Balak, she did. And because she obeyed God,
she experienced victory. However, She did not take the credit for her victory herself. She gave full credit to
God.
Servant leadership is not just about serving others. It is about serving God. When you are finishing a task or a
household chore, you are doing it for God. You are doing it for God when studying hard and receiving
academic achievements. Everything that you do is for God. That is why, in everything you do, you must please
God. You can please God if your heart is not grumbling when finishing a task or a chore when your heart is not
envious of other people’s achievements, when your heart is always grateful and giving credit to God for all the
victories you experience day.
When Jesus was here on earth, He was fully God and fully man. However, Jesus did not use His power to
abuse people and hurt them. But instead, Jesus served them and loved them. He led the people to know the
truth, so they would be saved.
GENERAL TRUTH:
GOD WANTS US TO SERVE AND LOVE HIM JUST AS JESUS DID.

(Teaching Picture 1) Job was a wealthy man living in the land of Uz. He owned 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels,
500 yokes of oxen, and 500 donkeys. Many servants worked for him, and he was considered the greatest man
among all those living in the East.
(Teaching Picture 2) Job had seven sons and three daughters. He was a good, blameless, and
upright man who avoided evil and regularly sacrificed to God for himself and his family.
(Teaching Picture 3) One day, God allowed Job to be tested. He lost everything he had. His servants were
killed, his livestock was stolen and burnt, and all his children died!
(Teaching Picture 4) Despite his loss, Job did not curse God. He fell to the ground and chose to worship God.
(Teaching Picture 5) Later on, Job was afflicted with painful sores all over his body. However, Job still did not
curse God, even when his wife had already told him to curse God.
(Teaching Picture 6) Job waited patiently on God’s plan, for he knew that sometimes, good people must
endure trials and hardships.
(Teaching Picture 7) In the end, God blessed Job twice as much as he had before, with new children and long
life.
Job, even amidst his suffering, continued to worship God. He was humble when he had everything. He
remained humble when everything was taken away from him. He continued to be humble when God blessed
him twice as much as he had before! He could curse God because he had all the reasons to do so, but he
chose not.
To be humble is a choice. It is a choice that God wants all of us to choose. Jesus taught us to be humble and
to recognize that God is above us and that we need His grace. Jesus demonstrated humility, even to the point
of death! As we humble ourselves, God will exalt us at the proper time. But better that praises come from
others’ lips than our own, and better God’s timing for everything than the course of events that we dream up on
our own!
GENERAL TRUTH:
TO BE HUMBLE IS TO RECOGNIZE THAT GOD IS ABOVE US

(Teaching Picture 2) ‘There was once a man going down from Jerusalem to Jericho.
(Teaching Picture 3) ‘Robbers attacked him, took his robes, and beat him up, leaving him half dead.
(Teaching Picture 4) ‘It so happened that a priest was going down that road, but when he saw the man, he walked on the
other side.
(Teaching Picture 5) ‘A Levite arrived next, went over and looked at the man, and then walked on by on the other side.
(Teaching Picture 6) ‘Then a Samaritan who was traveling that way arrived on the scene. When he saw him, his heart was
filled with pity. He went over to him, poured oil and wine on his wounds, and bandaged them
(Teaching Picture 7) ‘Then he put the man on his animal and took him to an inn, where he took care of him.
(Teaching Picture 8) ‘The next day, he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. “Take care of him,” he
told the innkeeper, “and I will pay you whatever else you spend on him when I come back this way.”
(Teaching Picture 9) Jesus concluded, ‘In your opinion, which one of these three acted like a neighbor toward the man
attacked by the robbers?’ The teacher of the Law answered, ‘The one who was kind to him.’ Jesus replied, ‘Go and do the
same.’
The Samaritans and the Jews were enemies. While the good Samaritan was a fictional person in a parable Jesus told in
this story, it demonstrates compassion for us. A man from Samaria saw a Jewish man hurt, penniless, and lying by the
side of the road. He did not see him as a problem or an interruption in his day. But instead, he had compassion for him.
He didn’t just toss some money at the man’s feet but physically took him to a place of safety and met his needs (Luke
10:25-37). The man on the street was viewed as being of value and was treated with compassion. The Samaritan has
compassion and mercy, which results in costly action.
Both mercy and compassion help us to see value in the lives of others. We are responsible for looking after our own
needs. However, sometimes we may have to do without some of our wants and comforts to extend mercy and
compassion to others. This can cost us time and money, but we will be rewarded with more than just a warm feeling in our
hearts. We will be blessed as we love and care for individuals regardless of their life circumstances. Choosing mercy and
compassion is to see others as God sees them.

GOD HAS SHOWN MERCY TO US. WE MUST SHOW MERCY TO OTHERS TOO.

(Teaching Picture 1) This is the story of how Hannah lived a faithful life before the Lord. Elkanah and Hannah had no
children. Hannah prayed to God because she wanted a baby boy. Hannah was sad.
(Teaching Picture 2) Elkanah tried to make her happy. ‘Don’t be sad, Hannah. I love you very much, much more than
many children.’
(Teaching Picture 3) Every year they both went to the Temple to give thanks to God. Hannah had something she wanted
to pray about.
(Teaching Picture 4) If God gave her a baby boy, she would give him to the Priest to be his helper, but Eli, the Priest,
thought she must be a drunk person.
(Teaching Picture 5) ‘You should not come in here drunk,’ he said. ‘I am praying to God, answered Hannah. ‘Go home,’
said Eli, ‘God has heard your prayer.’
(Teaching Picture 6) Soon Hannah had some happy news! God has heard me,’ she said. ‘We are having a baby! I have
promised him to God.’
(Teaching Picture 7) So, when Samuel was old enough, Elkanah and Hannah took him to be a helper in the Temple
church. Samuel grew up to love God with all his heart.
The shame of not being able to bear a son could have destroyed Hannah’s faith in God; however, she remained faithful to
God through the challenge. Rather than letting her problem define her life, she turned to God in prayer. God rewarded her
faithfulness and her tenacity. Because of her faithfulness and perseverance, God blessed her, and she bore Samuel.
God calls us to be faithful to Him when times are good and, most significantly, when we are experiencing difficulties.
Sometimes, some of our friends or neighbors will laugh at us when we tell them about the love of Jesus for them. Some
would even bully and mock us. When that happens to you, remember to always keep your faith steady in God and
persevere. Continue loving Jesus and obeying Him.
When you feel like you lack the strength to persevere, ask God for strength! When you feel like you’re having difficulty
loving and obeying Jesus, ask God to help you! God is always ready to help those who will come to Him.

(Teaching Picture 1) King Nebuchadnezzar ordered Ashpenaz, his chief of staff, to select from the prisoners the very best
of the young men from royal and noble families. They had to be strong, healthy, good-looking, and clever. Among those
Ashpenaz chose were Daniel and three of his friends. Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. The four were given Babylonian
names. Daniel was called Belteshazzar. Hananiah was called Shadrach. Mishael was called Meshach. Azariah was called
Abednego.
(Teaching Picture 2) These four young Jewish men were to be trained for three years in the language and literature of
Babylon. They would also be given food and wine from the King’s kitchens. Daniel knew the meat being offered was not
prepared as God had set out in the laws of Moses. He did not want to become drunk either.
(Teaching Picture 3) Daniel asked the chief of staff for permission not to eat these unacceptable foods. The chief of staff
refused: ‘The King has ordered that you eat this food and wine. The King will have me beheaded if you become pale and
thin.’ Daniel did not give in. He spoke with the attendant, ‘Test us for ten days on a diet of vegetables and water, then
compare us to the others eating the king’s food.’
(Teaching Picture 4) So for ten days, Daniel and his three friends were fed vegetables and water while the others ate the
King’s food and drank wine. At the end of the ten days, Daniel and his three friends looked healthier and better nourished
than the rest, so they were allowed to continue their diet.
(Teaching Picture 5) God gave these four young men an unusual aptitude for understanding every aspect of literature and
wisdom. At the end of their training, they were presented to King Nebuchadnezzar. No one impressed the King as much
as Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. So they entered the royal service. The King found them ten times more
capable than his wise men.
These four young men, guided by wisdom from God, showed great self-control in various unusual and dangerous
situations. When the people of God were exiled to Babylon, these four were taken into the palace to be formally educated
and raised as Babylonians. Through wisdom, they believed the food eaten at the King’s table was unclean and, with great
self-control, chose to eat only vegetables.
Wisdom is from God. We need the wisdom to make the right choices. We are prone to make wrong choices if not guided
with wisdom. Making bad choices will only lead to danger. Self-control is the result of wisdom. We are wise when we learn
to control our desires and emotions so we will not make foolish choices. Overeating, excessive use of gadgets, excessive
playing, and excessive sleeping are examples of foolish acts which are not guided by wisdom.
If you desire wisdom, go to God in prayer and ask it from Him! The Bible tells us that God is generous to give wisdom to
those who ask for it.

(Teaching Picture 1) In the early days of the Church, members shared what they had in common and gave it to the
Church so that the poor would be cared for. There are two examples in the book of Acts – one good and one very bad!
(Teaching Picture 2) The life of Barnabas is a good example. He was described as a ‘good man, full of the Holy Spirit. Out
of his generosity, he sold land and gave all the money to the Apostles. When he gave all his money, Barnabas was not
sad or mad. He was not even forced by someone to give. Out of his joyful and generous heart, he shared what he had
with others in need.
(Teaching Picture 3) The next example is a bad one. A husband and wife, Ananias and Sapphira, did the same. They sold
their possessions and gave them to the church, except they deceitfully held back a portion of the money. They were not
generous, and for their sin, they were struck down dead by God.
We will be joyful and generous when we love God and trust Him. When we acknowledge that all we have (good or bad,
poverty or abundance) is from God, we can choose to use it for His work. When we are joyful and generous, we will
attract others and be able to share the love of God with them. Being joyful or generous is not a burden when we focus
on God and who He is rather than on ourselves and our situations.
God wants us to be joyful and generous. The only way to do that is to keep our hearts close to Jesus. When we love God,
our hearts will be filled with joy. When we are filled with joy, it will no longer be difficult for us to share what we have
with others to help them experience the love of God
GENERAL TRUTH:
GENEROSITY FLOWS OUT FROM A JOYFUL HEART

Bible Text: 1 Samuel 7:1-17; 12:1-4
Have you ever dreamed of doing something so bravely? Perhaps, facing your fear of darkness or
heights, or conquering your stage fright to perform in front of many people. There are professions that, by their
nature, must act in courage- soldiers, firefighters, doctors, disaster rescuers, even professional athletes! But
where does courage come from?
Courage is the ability to act bravely, even when faced with difficulties and obstacles, because we trust
in God and love others in need. Related to courage is integrity. Someone who always does what they say they
will do and lives what they believe consistently would be a person of integrity.
Many men and women in the Bible, which we have learned in our previous lessons, are people of
integrity. One of them is Samuel.
(Teaching Picture 1) Samuel became Israel’s priest. He loved God, and he loved the people. He fasted,
prayed, and celebrated God’s feasts.
(Teaching Picture 2) Samuel told the people to get rid of evil sins. They must throw away their idols
and return to God again.
(Teaching Picture 3) Samuel said, ‘God alone we must worship, or the Philistines can hurt us. Always
love and worship God. Then He will protect us! Everyone meet me at Mitzpah, and I will pray for you. Let’s fast
and pray to God so He will forgive and protect us.’
(Teaching Picture 4) God heard Samuel’s prayers and made the Philistines all confused. Instead of
hurting Israel, their soldiers were bruised.
(Teaching Picture 5) The Philistines returned to their own country and didn’t bother Israel anymore.
Israel had peace all around, and no one bothered them any more.
(Teaching Picture 6) Samuel always fasted and prayed for the people. He traveled all around. Samuel
judged the people throughout Israel. He kept them Godly, safe, and sound.
Samuel was a leader who was reliable and could be trusted. He consistently demonstrated trust in God and a
love for people for all the days of his life. His character towards God and people was consistent, whether with people or
alone. In return, he was well respected and loved by the people around Him, and God was pleased with His life. To live
with integrity is to live consistently with your private and public life. If you are honest and kind when people are
watching you, you must also be honest and kind when no eyes are watching you.
Jesus was the ultimate example of both courage and integrity. He faced His death bravely, fully aware
of the shame and pain involved. He lived what He preached, and His private life was consistent with His public life. He
never sinned.
GENERAL TRUTH:
JUST LIKE JESUS, WE MUST LIVE WITH INTEGRITY, FOR THIS PLEASES GOD.
