Introduction
Nursing students play a crucial role in the healthcare team, yet their demanding
educational and clinical commitments often lead to high levels of stress and sleep deprivation.
The requirements of rigorous academics and shift duties in nursing programs compromise
students’ sleep, increasing risks to their health and causing daytime sleepiness (Ferreira &
Martino, 2012). This study examines the issue of sleep deprivation among nursing students,
highlighting why it deserves attention in nursing education.
Sleep is a fundamental human need, essential for overall health and well-being.
Insufficient sleep and untreated sleep disorders negatively impact health and public safety
(Ramar et al., 2021). Previous studies suggest that nursing students’ demanding schedules,
stressful environments, and poor sleep habits can lead to increased risks for both students and
their patients (Abdalkader & Hayajneh, 2008; Eanes, 2015; Kurebayashi et al., 2012).
Research also indicates that sleep deprivation is widespread among Filipino adults, who
average only six and a half hours of sleep—well below the recommended seven to nine hours.
Filipinos rank fourth worldwide for insufficient sleep (Sleep Cycle, 2022), with nearly half
sleeping less than six hours nightly (Arceo-Dumlao, 2014). A 2016 survey shows that 46% of
Filipinos lack adequate sleep, among the highest rates in Asia (National Nutrition Council,
2021).
This study aims to explore sleep deprivation among nursing students and identify
practical solutions to promote
healthier lifestyles, ultimately supporting their well-being and improving the quality of care
they will provide as future nurses.
As the researchers explore the intricate field of sleep science, this study attempts to find
practical solutions that not only promote healthier student lifestyles but also enhance the
quality of care provided by future nurses.
This research study aims to determine the prevalence of sleep deprivation among the nursing
students at Central Philippine Adventist College (CPAC). The study will seek to answer the
following questions:
a) Age
b) Sex
c) Year Level
d) Residence
2. How do nursing students describe their sleep patterns, particularly regarding the
number of hours they typically sleep, categorized into 3 to 4 hours, 5 to 6 hours, or
7 to 8 hours per night?
