C.U.P.S Editing Checklist

Capitalization: I will use the color


I capitalized the first letter of every sentence
I capitalized proper nouns (specific people, places, or things)

Understanding: I will use the color
I read my story to make sure it makes sense
I start a new paragraph and indent every time there:
Is a new speaker
The main idea/focus changes
There is a new setting

There is a time change

Punctuation: I will use the color


I ended each sentence with a punctuation (. ? !)
I read my piece aloud to see where to stop or pause for periods, commas, exclamation
points, or question marks.

I use open quotation marks and closed quotation marks to begin and end when someone
is speaking (“”)

Spelling: I will use the color


I circled or underlined all the words that might be spelled wrong.
(For the author) - For each word, I wrote 3 possible ways it can be spelled on a sticky

note and circled the one that looks the best.
(For the author) - I then looked up the word in the dictionary
