PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE

Structure
Afirmative sentences:
Subject + verb + complement
She likes coffee.
Negative sentences
Subject + do/does + not + Verb(in base form) + Complement

I do not (don't) play soccer.


He does not (doesn’t) play soccer.
Questions
Do/Does + Suject + Verb (in base form) + Complement + ?
Do you play soccer?
Does she play soccer?
Answers
Afirmative:
Yes, + Subject + do/does.
Yes, I do
Yes, she does
Negatives:
No, + Subject + do not (don't) / does not (doesn't).
No, I don't (No, I don't).
No, she doesn't (No, she doesn't).
QUESTIONS WITH VERB ‘‘TO BE’’
Am, Is/Are + Subject + Complement + ?

Se usa am, para I, is para he, she, it y are para you, we, they.
Is he a student?
Is she at home?
Are they happy?
Are you ready?
Afirmative:
Yes, + Sujeto + is/are.
Yes, he is
Yes, they are

Negative:
No, + Sujeto + is not (isn't) / are not (aren't).
No, he isn't
No, they aren't

GRAMMAR
We use the present simple to talk about, something that is true in the present:

I'm eighteen years old.


I'm a student.
He lives in Riobamba.
My mother cooks very delicious.

Something that happens regularly / habits in the present:

I play football every weekend.


We go to the park on weekends.
I wake up at 7 a.m
My sister studies at the school

Something that is always true or facts that happens.

The human body contains 206 bones.


water boils at 1000 degrees.
We often use adverbs of frequency like sometimes, always and never with the
present simple:

I sometimes go to the cinema.


She never plays football.
We sometimes eat out.

NOTE:
If your sentence uses “am,is/are” as the main verb, you do not need do/does.
If your sentence uses any other verb, you need do/does for questions or
negatives.
