Structural Report: IQRA Public Library Project

Location: Sharjah, UAE

Prepared for: University of Sharjah

Course: Design IV - Structural Systems

Date: December 4, 2024

1. Abstract
The IQRA Public Library, located in Sharjah, UAE, is designed as a G+1 community-focused
facility incorporating modern architectural elements and structural efficiency. The building
features a steel-framed system with a radial and linear grid combination to accommodate
architectural aesthetics and functional flexibility. This report includes detailed calculations
for structural components (columns, beams, and slabs), load paths, and the foundation
scheme to ensure structural stability and compliance with relevant codes.
2. Description of the Architectural and Structural Design

2.1 Architectural Design

The library incorporates interlinked circular masses symbolizing inclusivity and
connectivity. Functional zoning includes distinct areas optimized for community and
operational requirements:

- Ground Floor: Parking, multi-purpose hall, and sorting areas.

- First Floor: Reading areas, meeting rooms, and auxiliary spaces.

- Roof: Skylights for sustainable natural lighting.

2.2 Structural System

The structural framework comprises:
- Steel frames: Combines radial and linear grids to manage unique architectural loads.
- Steel slabs: Lightweight slabs for optimized load distribution and reduced structural
weight.

2.3 Rationale for the Chosen Structural System

Steel was selected as the primary structural material due to its high strength-to-weight
ratio, ease of construction, and adaptability to complex geometries. This choice aligns with
sustainability goals and supports the architectural vision of modernity and inclusivity.
3. Load Path and Stability

3.1 Vertical Load Path

Vertical loads, including dead and live loads, are transferred through the following
components:
- Steel slabs distribute the load to secondary beams.
- Secondary beams transfer loads to primary beams.
- Primary beams channel the loads to the columns.
- Columns transfer loads to the foundation.

3.2 Lateral Load Path

Lateral loads, such as wind forces, are managed by a moment-resisting frame supported by
strategically placed bracing. The radial geometry minimizes wind-induced pressure
differences, enhancing stability.

3.3 Stability
The structural system integrates braced connections and moment-resisting frames to
ensure global and local stability. The ductile behavior of steel mitigates risks associated
with dynamic loads, including seismic activity.
4. Structural Analysis and Design Calculations

4.1 Codes and Standards

The following codes and standards were used:
- AISC 360: Steel design and material specifications.
- ASCE 7-16: Load combinations and design forces.
- UAE Local Building Codes: Compliance with regional safety requirements.

4.2 Hand Calculations

4.2.1 Column Design

Columns are designed to support vertical loads, ensuring adequate capacity under factored
loads:
- Dead Load (DL): 200 kN
- Live Load (LL): 150 kN
- Factored Load: 1.2(DL) + 1.6(LL) = 440 kN

Material properties:
- Steel Grade: A992 (Fy = 345 MPa)
- Reduction Factor (ϕ): 0.9
Required Cross-sectional Area (Ag):
Ag = Pu / (ϕ × Fy) = 1419 mm².

Selected section: HSS 127x127x6.4 with Ag = 1460 mm² and capacity Pu = 453 kN > 440 kN.

4.2.2 Beam Design

Beams are designed to resist both bending moments and shear forces:
- Span: 6 m
- Uniformly distributed load: 15 kN/m
- Maximum Moment (M): 67.5 kN·m
- Maximum Shear (V): 45 kN

Selected beam: W200x42 with moment capacity Mn = 55.8 kN·m, sufficient to resist applied
loads.

4.2.3 Slab Design

Steel slabs span 3.5 m with total load 7.5 kN/m² (dead + live). The maximum bending
moment:
M = 11.48 kN·m. Reinforcement: T12@150 mm provides As = 376 mm², exceeding required
As = 344.4 mm².
5. Foundation Scheme

5.1 Description
The foundation comprises combined footings designed to evenly distribute loads. Soil
bearing capacity: 150 kPa.

5.2 Rationale
Combined footings were selected to accommodate closely spaced columns while minimizing
differential settlement risks. This ensures stability under applied loads.

6. Conclusions
The structural design of the IQRA Public Library demonstrates compliance with
international and local standards. The steel-framed system ensures stability and
functionality while supporting the architectural vision. Detailed calculations validate the
design's safety under applied loads, making it a sustainable and efficient choice for Sharjah's
community.
