On February 21, 1887, the Noli Me
Tangere’s manuscript was
finished. The novel was the result
of his readings, observations and
analytical discussion with his
compatriots and even enemies.
Rizal Wrote his First Novel
Rizal wrote the novel in three
countries:
Madrid, Spain
France
Germany
Savior of Noli Me Tangere
Rizal deleted the chapter "Elias and
Salome" due to lack of funds
(according to Zaide) but another
theory maybe the love story of Elias
and Salome misled the real
"intention" of the novel. When Rizal
was desperate, "somebody" saved
his novel, in the person of Maximo
Viola, a Bulakenyo scholar who was
also in Madrid at that time. He
loaned Rizal 300 pesos for printing
the first 2,000 copies of the novel.
Savior of Noli Me Tangere
The novel came from the
gospel of St. John (not St.
Luke as written by Rizal). In
Chapter 20 verses 13-17 it
says, the Lord Jesus Christ
saith, "Touch me not for I am
not yet ascended to my
Father..." The novel was
dedicated to his Fatherland
(the Philippines).
