UNIT 5 READING QUIZ Name: Date:

Read the article. Then answer the questions that follow.

Training the Body to Race

1 The best of the world’s road cyclists ride in races which take them over 2,100 miles
(3,500 kilometers) at an average speed of 28 miles per hour (45 kilometers per hour) on
flat roads. How is this amazing physical achievement possible?
2 Teams who compete in the world’s toughest road cycle races, like the Tour de France,
credit their success to training. The riders set goals for each day’s training. They also
recognize the need to take regular breaks. This means that even though cyclists in training
average about 770 miles (1,240 kilometers) a week, they do not train so hard that they
get injured before their race.
3 Cyclists are more in shape than normal people. The best riders get twice as much oxygen
from each breath as an average healthy person, so they are able to generate twice as
much energy. Due to the riders’ intense physical exercise, their hearts also pump blood to
their muscles much faster than those of most people.
4 Naturally, because cyclists are so active, they need to eat a lot of calories. They pay
attention to the nutritional value of their calories. Cyclists burn fat by not eating too many
carbohydrates. However, in a race they need more calories for energy. During the Tour de
France, a cyclist can consume up to 8,000 calories per day. In comparison, the average
person’s recommended daily amount is just 2,000 calories.
5 This kind of physical training and focus is essential in order to win a race, especially a long
distance race such as the Tour de France, which takes 23 days, including only two days of
rest. As a result cyclists must take their preparation seriously. Even the smallest aspect of a
rider’s performance could make the difference between winning and losing.
