Activity #1
Before immersing ourselves into the exciting discussion about setting up and
running a business in the most sustainable ways, we will first do inspiration-drawing
activity through the conduct of casual interviews with entrepreneurs in your community.
Identify 3 retailers, 3 service providers, and 1 producer. Use the template below for the
interview and in tracking the answers of the selected entrepreneur respondents. Discuss
the responses through writing and submit a brief analysis/report of the interview.

1. What are the businesses present in your community? How it is related to the
engineering field?
Three of the numerous businesses present in our community are Automotive
Shop, Machine Shop, and TESDA Training School. Automotive shops inspect, maintain,
and repair automobiles and light trucks that run on gasoline, electricity, or alternative
fuels, such as ethanol. They perform basic care maintenance, such as oil changes and
tire rotations, diagnose more complex problems, and plan and execute vehicle repairs. A
machine shop is related to engineering field as they are a facility with equipment and
supplies for machining, a process where parts are cut, fabricated, and finished to
prepare them for use. Machine shops are used in the creation of new parts, as well as
repairs of existing equipment and parts. Lastly, TESDA training school is designed to
enhance the knowledge, skills and attitudes of an individual in the field of automotive
servicing in accordance with industry standards. It covers core competencies such as;
performance of basic engine servicing through removal and reinstallation of
components for gas and diesel engines.
2. Explain the different factors to be considered in setting up a business.
Businesses exist to solve problems in the real world. Focus on customer feedback
and strive to turn them into evangelists. They will act as brand ambassadors for you.
Maintain strict financial control, form partnerships, and use low-cost marketing as much
as possible. Consider your options and the competition. Continuously train your team. It
takes a year or two to instill the mindset of your company in its employees. If this is
taken care of, I believe you should be fine.
17
4. What intelligent advice that you can give to those businessmen on their financial
downfall due to pandemic effect towards new normal?
It may appear that there are few, if any, opportunities for business growth at a
time when many companies are working remotely, operating at reduced capacity, or
shutting down completely. Despite these setbacks, there are ways to make the best of
the situation and keep your business growing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a student enrolled in a Technopreneurship class and having heard various
perspectives from businessmen during the activity, I strongly advise businessmen to
consider their customers' perspective when interacting with them, brush up on their
virtual selling skills, let their network know what they are doing, and prioritize authentic
and transparent communication with customers and employees, as the saying goes
“there is always opportunity for uniqueness and compelling products regardless of the
economy, but in these times, it requires a careful and well-executed approach”.

Description: Mechanical Screw Jack utilizes a screw mechanism to raise and lower the load.
The screw is rotated clockwise or counter clockwise and the screw threads, or the screw
pitch, hold the load in place. It is made up of two sizes of angle bar, a large bolt, nuts, and a
ball joint. In the automotive industry, mechanical jacks are frequently used to lift
automobiles and other heavy loads. A mechanical screw jack, unlike a hydraulic jack, lifts
and lowers objects using physical means such as a hand-operated lever. They automatically
lock in place when the power is turned off, and can only be moved once the power is turned
back on. Because of this built-in safety feature, mechanical screw jacks are a popular choice
for a variety of industrial applications.

Automotive services
When it comes to starting your own business, there are many things to take into
account. When opening an automotive business, this is especially true. Starting your
entrepreneurial journey is an exciting time. If you're unprepared, it might also be stressful.
An auto shop is a great place to look if you want to launch a business in a challenging
economic environment. Retail tire stores and auto repair shops are both regarded as
recession-proof industries. People still require their cars even in the worst economic
situations. To commute to work, complete errands, and go about their daily lives, pretty
much everyone needs dependable transportation. Auto repair businesses typically do well
even in tough economic times because cars are so central to Americans' daily lives. In the
United States, there were 230,600 auto repair and maintenance businesses as of 2018.
There has never been a better time to enter the auto industry because growth in the sector
is predicted to continue. Naturally, as with any new business, preparation is the key to
success in the future.

Refer to your SWOT Sheet and make further analysis. This time the ultimate task is to
make decision whether to pursue the proposed business idea or consider other alternative
businesses. There are two possible facets after the final decision will be made. First, pursue
the business because the SWOT reveals more positive indications than negative ones or,
second, disregard the business idea because there are more negative indications.
Consequently, try another business idea and subject it to the same process of analysis.
Make a presentation of your task and be proud to inspire others that you now have
chosen a viable engineering related business idea chosen from the opportunities obtained
from the data generated by the simple community mapping we did.
Analysis:
I've given the aforementioned business a lot of thought, and after careful
consideration, I've come to the conclusion that it will succeed because it has a low startup
risk. It is a crucial consideration when thinking about starting a business. Due to the risks,
most people are reluctant to start their own business. Due to its low startup risk,
entrepreneurs won't have to worry as much about whether the aforementioned business
will succeed or fail. In addition, as shown in the table, limited competition in the area is one
of its strength. This will help entrepreneurs stop worrying about competition for the said
business for at least a long enough time after it has prospered and attracted other
entrepreneurs to start their own similar businesses as well.

Background of the business
The auto industry is a popular target for environmental enthusiasts. For this reason,
among others, it is important for an auto repair shop to incorporate green practices.
Limiting the environmental footprint that a repair shop leaves is not only good for the earth;
it’s good for business as well. Being able to advertise an automotive repair shop as
environmentally friendly is a newer trend in the industry and can set such business apart
from the competition. This community has the potential for an automotive-related business
but something that possesses an edge as it is one of the communities that heavily rely on
automobiles for transportation. Fusing the field of waste management and automotive shop
industry would be a great start for a more eco-friendly business. Many consumers seek out
green businesses, so why would the auto repair industry be any different? With a few small
steps, our business can get on its way to making our shop environmentally friendly, corner a
growing market and increase auto shop revenue.
The eco-automotive repair shop and services are owned under the sole
proprietorship structure. This company focuses on providing repair and maintenance service
while also engaging in waste management activities that benefit the community and the
environment. It also helps the environment in many ways including, but not limited to: using
products that reduce our reliance on natural resources (e.g. rainwater tanks, solar energy
systems), using products that are made from recycled material (e.g. improvised mechanical
screw jack, hand-made mechanical tools), and by looking at our business activities to see if
we do anything differently (e.g. engaging in waste management activities). Although it will
be run by a single entrepreneur, the company is open to future mergers or collaborations
with other entrepreneurs who share the traits that an entrepreneur should possess.
The company is in charge of registering the company and making sure taxes are paid
in full and on time. It is undeniable how beneficial this business is to the community in that
it makes money and keeps that money in the area, supporting local businesses,
infrastructures, and schools. Additionally, the owners will make sure that all of the
employees are treated equally and receive the benefits they are entitled to. Furthermore, it
offers employment, pays wages, and keeps money in the community.
I. Executive Summary
The business is under the field of automotive industry, and its main goal is to
offer high-quality services but making use of environmental-friendly products and systems
in order to lessen the business impact on environment and be able to mitigate it. The
entrepreneur’s name is Charlie T. Sumagaysay, a second-year undergraduate student from
the Bachelor of Science major in Mechanical Engineering. The project's contribution is to
create employment opportunities, generate tax revenue, and raise the demand for the
business's essential services.
32
B. Major Purpose of Business
While proper vehicle maintenance and care help to maximize reliability and
longevity, components and parts will inevitably wear or break. New or old, all cars will need
repairs at some point. When that time comes, you want a shop that you can trust to
perform any auto repair needed to get your car back on the road. At Green’s Automotive
Service, we strive to be the trusted repair shop by performing the very best automotive
repairs and providing excellent customer service.
The word “green” was derived from the business’s primary goal, which is to
perform best automotive repairs and provide excellent customer service while engaging in
waste management practices. As there will always be toxic run-off coming from an auto
repair shop, given the materials and nature of the business it is inevitable. Creating
preventative measures to ensure none of these toxins are entering storm drains goes a long
way towards limiting its impact on the environment. Our shop will utilize proven and tested
efficient systems including, but not limited to: a drainage system that prevents toxins from
entering storm drains, a solar energy system to lessen our impact on the use of natural
resources as electricity, a water tank system that are used to provide storage of water for
use in many applications.

H. Critical Analysis
The automotive industry is not an exception to the risks and difficulties that
emerge from various industries over time. Particularly those pieces of machinery and
equipment have a lifespan that should be acknowledged and forewarned of because as time
passes and they sit unused for years, their quality degrades. If these tools aren't used
frequently, they'll rust and break down, costing the company money.
However, by being wise and thorough with the data analysis, market research, and
market demand, these risks and challenges can be overcome. Additionally, bringing in more
investors will assist the business in remaining viable, growing, and meeting community
needs.
I. Social Significance
With the population in the chosen area alone, this business can provide
employment opportunities for TESDA automotive mechanic students as well as residents of
the same community who have been classified as unemployed by the government. Since
this will be a registered business, tax payments to the government can be anticipated. By
using waste management procedures, this company can lessen its negative effects on the
environment.
