Rom-coms
I Some might say that rom-com, or romantic comedy, is the ultimate film genre. After all, it combines two
of our favourite things: love and humour. Despite the fact that we’ve all indulged in these films at one
time or another, most of us know very little about the history of the romantic comedy or how the film
genre began.
II Although the term “rom-com” may not have been coined until much later, the concept can be found all
the way back in Shakespeare’s time. Many of his comedies are love stories and include funny situations or
misunderstandings between romantic partners. For example, in one of his plays, The Merchant of Venice,
two wives secretly dress up as male lawyers, save their husbands from legal trouble and then reveal to
their husbands that it was them all along. Many rom-coms today still use this kind of situational humour.
III It didn’t take long for Hollywood to realise the potential of the rom-com genre. In the 1920s, silent films
such as Girl Shy and Sherlock Jr., inspired by Shakespeare’s rom-coms, made it to the big screen. Then
in 1934, romantic comedy changed forever with the film It Happened One Night. This rom-com became
the first film ever to win Oscars in all top five award categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor,
Best Actress and Best Screenplay. After that, rom-coms became more popular than ever.
Since then, the genre has changed quite a bit. Whereas early rom-coms only showed men and women

falling in love in classic, traditional situations, today’s rom-coms aren’t afraid to show every possible kind
of love story. The change has become even more noticeable in recent years. In films such as Crazy Rich
Asians or Set It Up, couples are shown dealing with unusual family situations or even splitting up at the
end because they feel they deserve better. They may not be as pleasant and familiar as the rom-coms of
the last century, but these films reflect the changing attitude of today’s generation. As we continue to grow
and change, so do our favourite films.
