2. OPERATION

2.1 Electric remote control mode

The electric remote control mode is the normal way to operate the monitor. This can be done
from a local or remote control panel. For details consult the installation documentation. If the
system (monitor and control system) is set in standby mode position, it normally will have to
be activated before it is ready to operate. If the system however is already in active mode
position, it is ready to operate instantly. This means that the monitor, when correctly prepared,
will be ready for immediate operation as the water supply is activated.

Note!
Installation instructions and setting of operating sectors must have been followed prior to
running the monitor in remote control mode.

Warning
Keep away from moving parts of the monitor to avoid injuries.

2.1.1 System activation

1. Activate the control system of the monitor if it is not already activated.
2. Orient the outlet pipe of the monitor in such a direction that the water jet can not cause
injuries or damages. Be aware that the power of the jet is extremely dangerous.
3. Activate the water supply to the monitor by opening the control valve or starting the pump.
4. Orientation of the jet can now easily and accurately be manoeuvred from the control panel.
Usually by means of a ”joy stick”.

2.1.2. System deactivation

1. Shut the water supply off.
2. Orient the monitor into a desired restart position depending of safety aspects and protection
priority areas to be covered.
3. Under “below zero degrees weather circumstances”, the nozzle shall be directed
downwards to drain the nozzle.
4. Deactivate the monitor control system if that is included in the local procedures.
5. Leave the monitor in a ready to operate position.
6. Report any observed deviations from normal operation or wear.

2.2 Manual override mode

The manual override mode is a good and safe way to operate the monitor during installation
and adjustment of limit switches. Also during maintenance and service, the manual override is
useful.

The manual override mode serves a back up possibility of the monitor in case of a power
supply failure of the control circuits. It also offers a possibility to operate the monitor in
directions not originally intended (out of the normal operating sector / hazard area).
As the name indicates the manual override mode require manual operation. When the operator
arrives to the monitor, it will under normal circumstances be prepared for remote control
operation. In order to prepare for manual override operation, the following steps have to be
followed.
Warning
Keep away from moving parts of the monitor to avoid injuries.

2.2.1 Activating manual override (with or without water supply to the monitor).

1. Make sure that the power supply to the monitor control circuits are cut of. If not,
disconnect the power supply before operating the monitor manually.
2. Locate the crank handles, which are fixed at the rear of the monitor. Release the (crank)
handles and insert them in the rear end of the electric motors. ” Location of the two crank
handles ” (see Fig. 5).
3. The monitor is now ready to be operated manually. To alter the orientation of the monitor
turn the crank handles accordingly.

2.2.2. Deactivating manual override.

1. To again prepare the monitor for electric remote control disconnect the crank handles and
fix them in their standby parking position. Note! Never operate the monitor remotely with
the handles installed on the monitor.
2. Connect the power supply to the control circuits of the monitor.
3. Orient the monitor into a desired restart position depending of safety aspects and protection
priority areas to be covered.
4. Deactivate the monitor control system if that is included in the local procedures.
5. Leave the monitor in a ready to operate position.
6. Report any observed deviations from normal operation or wear.

2.3. After use

After use, flush the monitor with water if foam concentrate have been used.

Make sure the monitor is ready to be after service, maintenance, inspection or firedrill. (This
will assure that the monitor will start operating properly next time it is needed.)

3. MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION

3.1. Maintenance

• To ensure full functionality the monitor should be operated electrically or manually on a

regular basis, at least once a month is recommended. It is also recommended to run the
monitor with water at these monthly runs.
• O-rings in the moving parts, fog/jet nozzle, elevation and horizontal movement, must be
lubricated at least once a year. Attach waterproof grease at the inside the fog/jet brass
nozzle. Lubricate the elevation and horizontal bearings by spraying (aerosol can) grease
into the bearing.
• O-rings (fog/jet nozzle, elevation and horizontal movement) needs to be checked every
second year for damages. When changing the o-rings make sure to grease richly on the o-
rings and the grooves.

3.2. Inspection

• Inspection of the monitor is recommended to be carried out monthly.

4. TROUBLE SHOOTING

The design of this monitor is made to meet the highest demands of reliability. Under the
condition that the operations and maintenance instructions are followed, malfunction or
deviating performance shall not be expected. If disturbances are encountered, the following
trouble shooting guide can be of use.
Observation
Monitor does not move in one or several directions during remote control operation.

1. Check power supply to control circuits

2. Check if eventual existing motor protection is tripped.
3. Make sure the monitor is not positioned in any extreme position (limit switches activated).
4. Check functionality of electrical control system.
5. Run the monitor in manual operation mode to exclude possibility of mechanical failure.

If non-of the above suggested investigations lead to any conclusion, contact Svenska Skum for
advice.

Observation
Monitor does operate, out of the pre-set sector of operation during remote control operation,
in one or several directions during remote control operation.

Warning. Stop operating the monitor immediately since permanent mechanical damage may
occur!

1. This may occur if one or several phases of the 3 phase electrical system have been changed.
In this case, the directions of movements have changed; up become down and left becomes
right.
2. Check if the limitswitches are correctly set or if they are damaged.
3. Check the locking function of the adjustable cam segments (see section adjusting the
operating sectors).

5. REPAIR

Spare parts are available from Sv Skum upon request. Spare parts recommendation is made as
effect of wear or ageing for the expected lifetime of this monitor. Skum recommends the user
to keep spares for two years operation in stock. Sparepart lists are available if required.
