INTRODUCTION

The analysis of the course community service by the University of Port Harcourt
gave the institution a special recognition among Nigerian Universities. The aim for
introducing this course was to train the undergraduate to appreciate the value of the
3
university education. Interestingly, it was designed to actualize the motto of the
university which is FOR ENLIGHTENMENT AND SELF RELIANCE.
Therefore, the concept of SELF RELIANCE in conjunction with the community
service course prepares the undergraduate adequately to face the challenge of
tomorrow.

The knowledge of community service, theory and practical provides students

of all discipline with field knowledge and ability to serve bringing together leading
scholar of different discipline in the field of community service. The University of
Port Harcourt is also not left out in carrying out this exercise for its host
community.

The community service in the university of port Harcourt is a compulsory

exercise that is under taken by every student in all the faculties and departments,
and faculty of Engineering is not an exception, so all students in various
department and faculty are expected to participate actively in this exercise, that is
why the school has taken it upon its own to maintain the community service
course.

I recently took part in a community service project aimed at cleaning the

SSLT Faculty administrative building. In this report, i will provide an overview of
the project, including the job description, location details, materials used, group
members, and the overall impact of our community service efforts.

DEFINITION AND MEANING OF COMMUNITY SERVICE

4
The perception of the two key words community and service would let one to
understand the meaning of community service. The word community is defined as
a group of people living in a particular place who share things in common. While
service is seen as the action taken to render assistance.

Therefore, community service can be defined as a voluntary work intended to help

people in a particular area or it is that exercise that is carried out by someone or a
group people for the benefit of the public or the community.

Community service usually takes place within or outside the school environment.
It is a medium utilized by the school based on the relationship between the school
and the community in the sense that the school is not existing in a vacuum but in
the community and under their permission, to help the community socially under
the supervision of the school authority.

EMERGENCE OF COMMUNITY SERVICE IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT

HARCOURT

From the inception of the university, the University of Port Harcourt recognized the
important role a balanced educational system can play in providing the link between town
and gown.

Consequently, at the first seating of the provisional Senate of the University College, Port
Harcourt, held at the residence of the Principal, Professor Donald E. U.

5
Ekong on the 29th of October, 1976, Senate considered the proposal by the joint Board of
the then Schools of Humanities, Social Studies and Educational Studies on the need to
establish a committee on National Self-reliance.

The focus of this committee was to involve both staff and students of the University
College in the problems of the urban and rural communities through practical
participation in community service as an integral part of the school curriculum. Senate
therefore set up an ad hoc committee to prepare a work programmed for consideration.

The committee members were Professor E. J. Alagoa

(Chairman), Dr. R. A. Odihirin, Mr. C. B. Powell, Dr. (Mrs.) A. I. Spiff and one person
each from the Schools of Humanities, Social Studies and Educational Studies.

Consequently, at the second meeting of Senate held on the 5th of January 1977, the
program was re-designate as “Community Service Field Courses”. It was also decided at
the same meeting that the program shall be an integral part and an essential requirement
for all degree program and will be credit earning. The program is planned so as to instill
the dignity of labor in the minds of the students.

Each academic department has a Representative who works directly with the students to
identify possible projects to be undertaken by such department. Such identified project
proposals are forwarded to the Central Community Service Board through the faculty
Coordinators for consideration and approval. Since then the unit has undergone several
transformations under various directors until its present form.

MY COMMUNITY

SERVICE EXPERIENCE

6
My community service was an awesome, and memorable one. I got to engage in
the midst of other students during my allotted time. i started in the morning by
10am after the first attendance was taken and left by 1pm. My department was
grouped into different groups so the work will be faster and smoother, and at the
end of the day we were sure of a successful, and job well-done however i fell into
group 6

The area of specialization was the SSLT faculty administrative building. I was
tasked with cleaning the faculty building outside Windows. The supervisor was
there to supervise the work. And Finally, when i finished, i came back for second
attendance in confirmation of my stay and presence was taken by the supervisor.
As they say the community is part of the making of a child. Participating in this
community made me feel fulfilled. It's also a way of giving back to my community
by serving as an expression of humility. Keeping the surroundings of the
community should be everyone's priority. It should be seen as a rewarding and
fulfilling assignment not a burden. In this way i was privileged notice and look out
for everyone that lives in the community. I took it upon ourself to diligently and
actively participate in this service.
I was also grateful to my supervisor for the refreshments.

NATURE OF THE WORK

7
The work which was a practical one not quite difficult though, it took some hours
to accomplish due to the fact that i needed to go upper to clean the higher windows
of the building.

Despite the work was a simple one I took responsibility for my assigned
section ,ensuring that the glasses wouldn't have any patch or prints that can be
caused by the detergent.

The community service began at 10am prompt, on the 27th of Nov 2023. I was told
to commence work. Attendance was taken and i work my work. The cleaning of
the glass was handled. I cleaned the glasses on the down roll of the building at the
left hand side of the faculty building. Whilst cleaning carefully to ensure neatness
and transparency of the glasses I stretched upper to my greatest reach.
The work progressed smoothly ,I had wished if there was ladder to lift me up to the
upper windows outside, the scarcity of ladder was my constraint. working tools
and the sun was scotchy on that day, I could only clean the windows thay were in
rolls ,even still i had to climb the toilet chambers to get proper hold of ye glasses to
prevent cuts of pulling of the windows.
I rounded up around 12:40 pm and a final attendance was taken. For my service,i
was rewarded with light refreshments by my coordinator, who commended me on
a job well done.

CLEANING MATERIALS USED FOR THE WORK

Community service has been a program achievable with specific apparels called
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Working Tools. but in my case I didn't
require tools but cleaning materials and solvents to terminate and remove any form
of patch and dirt on the glass.

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED
● Shortage of working tools such as cutlasses, head pans, and shovels.
● The work was continuously disrupted by the rain.
SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS/RECOMMENDATION
1. There should be a scarffold or wooden ladder to enable student’s carryout
projects with ease.
2. Proper enlightenment about the project should be made to enable students
learn and carryout project. This is important because most project works are
new to students, without proper enlightenment students may endanger
themselves with the hazards that may accompany the work thereby not
achieving the aim of the service.
3. A bright atmosphere/weather should be ensured in order to prevent rain from
disrupting the project

OVERALL IMPACT

My community service project had a significant impact around, beside the

left hand side of the faculty building. By thoroughly cleaning the glasses
on the down roll at the left hand side of the wall. My work was able to go
in union with other students that cleaned up the environment. Supporting
a clearer vision environment for the occupants and visitors that would/sit
beside the windows. The organization efforts improved public health as it
reduces the habitat to diseases vector, thereby beneficial to the well-being
of the employees, students and visitors.

CONCLUSION

Moreover, this report highlights the importance of collaboration and partnerships

in community service.

This report will serve as a source of help to many people, especially the workers ,
by providing in-depth knowledge on the interrelationship between the school and
the community also this report serves as a foundation ∅ on cleaning and
beautifying the Faculty building was a success. Through our dedicated efforts, we
significantly improved the cleanliness, organization, and aesthetics of the building,
positively impacting the employees and visitors. We believe that our project has
contributed to fostering a more pleasant and within the SSLT administrative
building.
