Light - Reflection and Refraction
1. Ray diagrams - convex lens, concave mirror
2. Refraction of light through glass slab
3. Lens formula magnification
mirror formula magnification
4. Laws of Reflection of light
● The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection. ● The incident ray, the reflected ray and the normal to the mirror at the point of incidence all lie in the same plane. 5. Laws of refraction of light i) The incident ray, the refracted ray and the normal to the interface of two transparent media at the point of incidence - all lie in the same plane. ii) Snell's law: The ratio of sine of angle of incidence to the sine of angle of refraction is a constant for the light of a given colour and for the given pair of media sin i —--- = Constant Sin r 6. * They always give an erect diminished image. * They have a wider field of view as they are curved outwards. 7. Concave mirror : i) Used in torches, search-lights ii) Used in vehicles head lights iii) Used as shaving mirrors iv) The dentists used to test / examine teeth of patients v) Used in solar furnace. 8. Refractive index: The relative speed of propagation of light in different media. 9. When light travels from an optically denser medium to an optically rarer medium, the ray of light bends away from the normal and the speed of light increases 10. As the refractive index of the medium increases, the speed of light decreases. 11. Power of lens - The ability of a lens to converge or diverge the rays of light falling on it. Unit - Dioptre D Formula - P =
12. Radius of curvature = 2 x focal length
R = 2f
13. The refractive index of diamond is 2.42. It means The ratio of the speed of light in air and the speed of light in diamond is 2·42
