Zebar School For Children: Std. X - Science

The experiment aims to observe the reactivity of metals Zn, Fe, Cu, and Al with various salt solutions to determine their reactivity order. The results indicate that the reactivity series is Al > Zn > Fe > Cu, with aluminum being the most reactive. Precautions include cleaning the metals before use and using small pieces of metal.

Exp 11: Reactivity of Metals

Name: ___________________________ Sec: ______ Roll No. _____ Date___________

• AIM:
To observe the action of Zn, Fe, Cu and Al metals on the following salt solutions:
ZnSO4, FeSO4, CuSO4 and Al2(SO4)3 and arrange Zn, Fe, Cu and Al(metals in decreasing
order of reactivity based on the above result.

• MATERIAL REQUIRED:
Test tubes, aluminum sulphate solution, copper sulphate solution, zinc sulphate solution,
iron sulphate solution, metal strips of iron, Zinc, copper, and aluminum.

• OBSERVATION AND CONCLUSION:

1. Al is not displaced by any of the four metals from its salt solution, therefore Al is at
the top of the reactivity series.
2. Al can displace Zn from its salt solution, but no other metal could displace it. Hence,
the reactivity order is Al > Zn.
3. Al and Zn metals can displace Fe metal from its salt solution, but Cu cannot.
Therefore, the arrangement of metals in decreasing order reactivity series is
Al > Zn > Fe > Cu

• PRECAUTIONS:
1. Clean the metals by rubbing them with a piece of sandpaper before dipping them in the
salt solutions.
2. Use a very small piece of metal every time.
