Recap:What is the Internet?

 This is the world’s largest Wide Area Network.


 It is a network of networks that connects
computers worldwide via a huge set of
telecommunication links.
 The Internet does not have a central authority.
No one is in charge of the Internet.
Advantages of the Internet
 Vast volumes of information are available on virtually
any topic.
 Information can be updated regularly.
 Much of the information is free.
 It allows people to communicate freely
 It is convenient for many common chores e.g. booking
flights and Internet banking.
 It is easily accessible: all you need is a PC with modem
and a phone line.
Disadvantages of the Internet
 Lots of incorrect information is available; there is no authority
to check the accuracy of Internet documents, etc.
 It can be difficult to find exactly what you need because of the
large volume of information available.
 Computer viruses can easily be downloaded without the user
realizing.
 There are lots of undesirable websites on the Internet
(pornography, racist, propaganda (half truths), etc.).
 The security of computers and network systems connected to
the Internet may be at risk from hackers.
Connecting to the internet
For a basic connection to the Internet you need
the following:
 Computer hardware – a personal computer
and modem
 Communication link – a phone line or cable or
satellite dish
 An Internet Service Provider (ISP) – e.g. GTT
or Digicel
 Computer software – internet browser , social
media software and other internet ready apps
Internet Service Provider (ISP)

This is a company that has a


direct connection to the
Internet and gives users
access to it, usually for a fee.
Internet (web) Browser
 In order to navigate (go through) the World
Wide Web (www), you need a web browser.

 A web browser is a program that resides in your


computer and enables you to find, retrieve, view
and send hypertext and hypermedia documents
over the web.
Things you can do on a Web
browser
 View hundreds of millions of web pages
from all over the world.
 Send and receive email

 Participate in conferences

 Chat

 Shop online

 See and hear recorded broadcasts


Types of Web Browsers

 Popular browsers are

 Internet Explorer ,
 Mozilla Firefox
 Google Chrome,
 Opera and
 Apple Safari

Email

E-mail is a system that allows


messages to be sent and received by
computers. E-mail is the most
common form of electronic
communication.
Instant Messaging (IM)

 Instant messaging lets people send


instant messages (text-based
conversation) to each other over the
internet.
 There are many systems available

(WhatsApp, Messenger – Facebook and


MSN, etc)
VOIP

 VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol,


is the routing of voice conversations
through the internet.
 VoIP calls are often free apart from

the cost of being connected to the


internet.
E-learning

 This is learning conducted via


electronic media, typically on the
Internet.
 In most cases, it refers to a course,

program or degree delivered


completely online.
E-Commerce

Ecommerce means the sale and purchase


of goods and services over electronic
systems such as the internet. This means
businesses selling to customers or to other
businesses. Or people selling to other
people directly through auction sites such
as Ebay.
Bulletin boards
 An Internet site where users can
post comments about a particular
issue or topic and reply to other
users' postings.

 It is also called a “notice board”.


Blogging and Vlogging
 Blogging: A blog is an online
journal which you share your
thoughts about a particular
subject with readers.
 Vlogging: The activity or practice

of posting short videos to social


media sites or vlogging sites.
Pod-casting
 A podcast is an episodic series of
digital audio or video files which a
user can download and listen to.

 It can be downloaded via a podcast


site to the user's own local computer
or mobile device – tablet or phone.
