STATISTIC

1. Organize the data

Pairs of Sneakers Frequen

Owned (X) cy
1 2
2 5
3 8
4 12
5 12
6 0
7 1

Total number of students = 40.

2. Calculate the mean (x̄)

To find the mean, use the formula:

x̄ = Σ (X * Frequency) / Total number of students

We need to compute X * Frequency for each row:

1 * 2=2
2 * 5 = 10
3 * 8 = 24
4 * 12 = 48
5 * 12 = 60
6 * 0=0
7 * 1=7

Now, sum these values:

Σ (X * Frequency) = 2 + 10 + 24 + 48 + 60 + 0 + 7 = 151

The mean is:

x̄ = 151 / 40 = 3.775

3. Calculate the sample standard deviation (s)

The formula for the sample standard deviation is:

s = √( Σ (X² * Frequency) / (n - 1) - x̄² )

First, calculate X² * Frequency for each row:

1² * 2=1*2=2
2² * 5 = 4 * 5 = 20
3² * 8 = 9 * 8 = 72
4² * 12 = 16 * 12 = 192
5² * 12 = 25 * 12 = 300
6² * 0 = 36 * 0 = 0
7² * 1 = 49 * 1 = 49

Now, sum these values:

Σ (X² * Frequency) = 2 + 20 + 72 + 192 + 300 + 0 + 49 = 635

Now, use the formula for the variance:

Variance = Σ (X² * Frequency) / (n - 1) - x̄²

Variance = 635 / 39 - 3.775²
Variance = 16.28 - 14.26 = 2.02

The sample standard deviation is:

s = √2.02 ≈ 1.42

4. Complete the Relative Frequency and Cumulative

Relative Frequency columns
The relative frequency for each category is calculated by dividing the frequency by
Relative Frequency = Frequency / 40
Pairs of Sneakers Frequen Relative Cumulative Relative
Owned (X) cy Frequency Frequency
1 2 2/40 = 0.05 0.05
2 5 5/40 = 0.125 0.05 + 0.125 = 0.175
3 8 8/40 = 0.20 0.175 + 0.20 = 0.375
4 12 12/40 = 0.30 0.375 + 0.30 = 0.675
5 12 12/40 = 0.30 0.675 + 0.30 = 0.975
6 0 0/40 = 0 0.975 + 0 = 0.975
7 1 1/40 = 0.025 0.975 + 0.025 = 1.00

5. Find the first quartile (Q₁)

The first quartile Q₁ is the value at the 25th percentile. To find this, we need to look
for the point where the cumulative relative frequency is closest to 0.25.

From the table:

 The cumulative relative frequency for X = 3 is 0.375, which is greater than 0.25.
 So, Q₁ lies between 2 and 3.
We can estimate Q₁ using linear interpolation:

Q₁ = 2 + (0.25 - 0.175) / (0.375 - 0.175) * (3 - 2)Q₁ = 2 + 0.075 /

0.2Q₁ = 2 + 0.375 = 2.375

6. Find the median (Q₂)

The median Q₂ is the value at the 50th percentile. We need to look for the point
where the cumulative relative frequency is closest to 0.50.

From the table:

 The cumulative relative frequency for X = 4 is 0.675, which is greater than 0.50.
 So, the median Q₂ lies between 3 and 4.

Using linear interpolation:

Q₂ = 3 + (0.50 - 0.375) / (0.675 - 0.375) * (4 - 3)Q₂ = 3 + 0.125 /

0.3Q₂ = 3 + 0.417 = 3.417

7. Find the third quartile (Q₃)

The third quartile Q₃ is the value at the 75th percentile. We need to look for the point
where the cumulative relative frequency is closest to 0.75.

From the table:

 The cumulative relative frequency for X = 4 is 0.675, and for X = 5 it is 0.975, which covers
0.75.
 So, Q₃ lies between 4 and 5.

Using linear interpolation:

Q₃ = 4 + (0.75 - 0.675) / (0.975 - 0.675) * (5 - 4)Q₃ = 4 + 0.075 /

0.3Q₃ = 4 + 0.25 = 4.25

8. Percent of students who owned at least 5 pairs of

sneakers

The students who owned at least 5 pairs are those who own 5, 6, or 7 pairs. The
cumulative frequency for 5, 6, and 7 pairs is:

12 + 0 + 1 = 13

The percentage is:

(13 / 40) * 100 = 32.5%

9. Find the 40th percentile

The 40th percentile corresponds to the position at:

0.40 * 40 = 16

Looking at the cumulative relative frequency:

 The 16th student is in the group with X = 3, since the cumulative frequency for X = 3 is 15,
and for X = 4 it is 27.

Thus, the 40th percentile is X = 4.

10. Find the 90th percentile

0.90 * 40 = 36

Looking at the cumulative relative frequency:

 The 36th student is in the group with X = 5, since the cumulative frequency for X = 5 is 24,
and for X = 6 it is 24.

Thus, the 90th percentile is X = 5.
