Orchestra audition committees are
attracted to violinists who can show
nuance and range in a variety of repertoire
and styles.

Being able to show a wide palette of tonal

colours includes being able to control the
speed, intensity, and amplitude of vibrato.

I want to dig into 12 ways we can improve

our sound through our vibrato, so that
we can create the millionaire-dollar tone
and phrasing that audition committees will
vote for.

12 Vibrato Tips To Improve Your

Sound/Colour
.

1. Maintain a soft thumb.

2. Think space inside each finger knuckle.

3. Think soft palm.

4. Create an energy circuit from the

thumb to the fingertip.

5. Keep chest, shoulder, and neck
relaxed and open.

6. Vary the surface area of the finger

(finger tip vibrato vs. Flat finger vibrato)

7. Listen, listen, listen (and sing).

Improve your musicality, sing what you
want to hear, and emulate as closely as
possible.

8. Practice continuous vibrato (using

the tips above).

9. Practice different vibrato + bow
speed combinations.
Widen your colours: Vibrato: 1-10
speed + Bow speed 1-10 + Bow
pressure 1-10

10. A vibrato is never the exact same

speed/amplitude during a long note.
(Listen and create nuance with bow
speed + vibrato.)

11. For wider vibrato: open up hand &

fingers; For narrow vibrato: keep
hand/fingers closed.

12. Practice phrases with senza vibrato

and shape only with the bow. Then
layer on vibrato to add additional
colour, shape, and nuance.
