Worksheet for Lewis Structures and VSEPR

December 15, 2024, Engin Yapici

Question 1: When hydrogen gas reacts with nitrogen gas, a colorless compound used in fertilizers
is formed. For every single nitrogen molecule, three hydrogen molecules are required to form two
molecules of the product. Write and balance the chemical equation for this reaction.

Question 2: A molecule is made of one sulfur atom and four fluorine atoms. The sulfur atom has
an expanded octet and forms single bonds with each fluorine atom. The fluorine atoms have a
complete octet around them. Draw the Lewis structure for this molecule, ensuring all lone pairs are
shown.

Question 3: A molecule consists of a central phosphorus atom surrounded by three hydrogen

atoms. The central atom also has a lone pair of electrons. Predict the molecular geometry of this
molecule based on the repulsion of electron pairs and name the bond angles around the
phosphorus atom.

Question 4: A noble gas molecule contains one central atom from Group 18 bonded to four
halogen atoms, specifically fluorine. The central atom also has two lone pairs, which do not
contribute to bonding. Despite the presence of these lone pairs, the molecule’s shape is
symmetrical.
● Draw the Lewis structure of the molecule.
● Determine the molecular geometry using VSEPR theory.
● State whether this molecule is polar or nonpolar and explain why.

Question 5: A simple molecule is composed of one carbon atom bonded to two sulfur atoms. The
molecule is linear because all atoms are arranged in a straight line, and the bonds between carbon
and sulfur are identical.
● Write the chemical formula for this molecule.
● Draw its Lewis structure.
● Determine its molecular geometry and bond angles.

Question 6: A molecule contains one phosphorus atom bonded to five chlorine atoms. Each bond
is identical, and the atoms are arranged such that three chlorine atoms form a triangular plane,
while the other two are positioned above and below this plane.
● Draw the Lewis structure for this molecule.
● Determine its molecular geometry and the bond angles involved.
● Explain whether this molecule is polar or nonpolar and why.
