WEEK 2 (13th - 17th JAN)

MATH WEEKLY LESSON PLAN

GRADE: 6

DURATION: 45 minutes per lesson

Day 1
Introduction to Algebra and Definitions

Lesson 1: Introduction to Algebra (45 minutes)

• Objective:
o Understand what algebra is and its importance in mathematics.
• Activities:
o Brief discussion: “What is Algebra?”
o Relate algebra to real-life examples (e.g., calculating shopping costs, distance,
etc.).
o Explore basic concepts of unknowns using simple equations like x+3=5.

Lesson 2: Definition of Terms (45 minutes)

• Objective:
o Define and explain terms such as variables, coefficients, terms, and constants.
• Activities:
o Introduce each term with examples (e.g., 2x+5: 2 is the coefficient, x is the
variable, 5 is the constant).
o Group activity: Identify terms, coefficients, and variables from given expressions.
• Materials: Worksheets with expressions.

Day 2
Forming Expressions and Like/Unlike Terms

Lesson 3: Forming Algebraic Expressions (45 minutes)

• Objective:
o Write algebraic expressions from verbal statements.
• Activities:
o Teach how to translate phrases into algebraic expressions (e.g., "5 more than a
number" becomes x+5).
o Pair work: Practice forming expressions from various statements.
Lesson 4: Like and Unlike Terms (45 minutes)

• Objective:
o Identify and distinguish between like and unlike terms.
• Activities:
o Explain the concept of like terms (e.g., 2x,5x) and unlike terms (e.g., 2x,5y).
o Sorting activity: Students categorize given terms into like and unlike groups.
• Materials: Cards with terms, whiteboard examples.

Day 3
Simplifying Algebraic Expressions

Lesson 5: Simplifying by Addition and Subtraction (45 minutes)

• Objective:
o Simplify algebraic expressions using addition and subtraction.
• Activities:
o Explain combining like terms (e.g., 3x+5x=8x).
o Practice examples as a class and individually.
• Materials: Simplification worksheets.

Lesson 6: Simplifying by Multiplication and Division (45 minutes)

• Objective:
o Simplify algebraic expressions involving multiplication and division.
• Activities:
o Explain rules for multiplying/dividing terms (e.g., a) 2x×3=6x, b) 6x÷2=3x).
o Practice problems in pairs and individually.
• Materials: Whiteboard, individual practice problems.

Homework/Extension Activities

• Create exercises aligned with the content covered each day for practice at home.
• Assign one or two problems for forming expressions and simplifying them.

Assessment

• End of the week: Small quiz (15-20 minutes) to assess understanding of all topics.
