1. What are some of your favorite snack foods?

(2pts)
- My favorite snack foods are Calbee Vegetable Chips, strawberry Pocky,
and almond Pepero.
2. How much do you typically eat in one sitting? (2pts)
- I typically eat half a bag of Calbee Vegetable Chips in one sitting or a
small bag of Pocky or Pepero.
3. If your favorite snack food has a food label, how many servings are there, and
how many calories per serving? Are you eating more than one serving? If your
favorite food does not have a label, what do you think a serving size would be?
(4pts)
- There are two servings per bag (around 25g) and it is 131 calories per
serving. If it didn’t have a label, I would’ve continued my regular amount
of half a bag per sitting. The current amount I eat is influenced by the fact
that I believed all snacks to be relatively unhealthy, so two years before I
would’ve been eating the entire bag. In this recent year, though, just half a
bag.
4. Is your favorite snack food healthy? What do you think makes it healthy? Be
specific. (4pts)
- I would think that it could be labeled as healthier than other snacks like
chips because it is baked and not fried with oils, but at the same time,
they are still chips. They are labeled as vegetable chips, however, and the
ingredients list also corroborates that. It contains spinach, carrots,
pumpkin, green pepper, tomato, and shurimp seaweed, which I would
consider to be healthy foods if eaten in their original form.
5. Is there any aspect of it that could make it unhealthy? [Example: Popcorn is a
popular snack that can be healthy in moderation since it’s a whole-grain food.
However, it can turn into an unhealthy snack if loaded up with salt and butter.]
(4pts)
- Although they may be labeled as vegetable chips they contain not much
nutritional value. They contain a lot of carbohydrates (15g) and a lot of fat
(7g), and one gram of protein. There are two grams of sugar in it, as well.
However, when you look at the things one could consider healthy like
vitamins, iron, potassium, and calcium, these % daily values are labeled
as 0 except for potassium at 1%.
6. After reading the article on the new food label and watching the short video on
food labels, in the lecture this week, tell me how useful you think the percent
daily value listed on a food label is? Do you understand what it means after
watching the video and reading the article? Please explain/define what it is.
Be specific and provide details (4pts)
- I think the percent daily value is really useful because it will provide
context for how much of each nutrient you should consume on a daily
basis. Percent daily value is a new feature added to the nutritional labels
by the FDA and lists the percentage of how much of the daily value for
that nutrient you should consume is in the food. Anything that is higher
than 25% means that the food contains high amounts of that nutrient,
and anything lower than 5% means there is very little of that nutrient in
the food. The values by which the percentage is judged have changed
according to recent studies on the value of each nutrient and how much
they benefit the body.
