SOME APPLICATIONS OF TRIGONOMETRY

GRADE 10
LEVEL 1
1
If a vertical pole 6 m high casts a shadow 2√𝟑 m long on the level
ground , then the Sun’s elevation is
a) 90° b) 45° c) 30° d) 60°
2
In a right triangle , one side other than the hypotenuse is 8 cm and an
acute angle is 450 . What is the length of the hypotenuse?

3
AB is a 6 m high pole and CD is a ladder inclined at an angle of 600 to
the horizontal and reaches up to a point D of pole. If AD = 2.54 m, find
the length of the ladder.(Take √𝟑= 1.73)

LEVEL 2
4
If the angles of elevation of a tower from two points distant a and b (a
> b ) from its foot and in the same straight line from it are
30° and 60° , then the height of the tower is
𝒂
a) √𝒂 + 𝒃 b) √𝒂𝒃 c) √𝒂 − 𝒃 d) √
𝒃

5 A man observes a car from the top of a tower, which is moving

towards the tower with a uniform speed. If the angle of depression of
the car changes from 30° to 45° in 12 minutes, find the time taken by
the car now to reach the tower.

6 From the top of a hill, the angles of depression of two consecutive

kilometrestones due east are found to be 45° and 30° respectively.
Find the height of the hill.

7 The tops of two towers of height x and y , standing on level ground,

subtend angles of 30° and 60° respectively at the centre of the line
joining their feet, then find x : y
LEVEL 3
8 The angle of elevation of a cloud from a point 60 m above the surface
of the water of a lake is 30° and the angle of depression of its shadow in
water of lake is 60°. Find the height of the cloud from the surface of
water.

9 Assertion: If the angle of elevation of Sun, above a perpendicular line

(tower) decreases, then the shadow of tower increases
Reason: It is due to decrease in slope of the line of sight.

a) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true and reason (R) is the correct
explanation of assertion (A).
(b) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true but reason (R) is not the
correct explanation of assertion (A).
(c) Assertion (A) is true but reason (R) is false.
(d) Assertion (A) is false but reason (R) is true

10 The angle of elevation of the top of a tower at a point is 45° . After

moving a distance ‘p’ towards the foot of the tower, the angle of
elevation of the top of the tower is found to be 𝛉. Prove that the height
𝒑 𝒕𝒂𝒏𝜽
of the tower is .
𝒕𝒂𝒏𝜽 −𝟏

11. An aeroplane, when flying at a height of 4000 m from the ground passes
vertically above another aeroplane at an instant when the angles of
elevation of the two planes from the same point on the ground are 60°
and 45° respectively. Find the vertical distance between the aeroplanes
at that instant.
12 A group of students of class X visited India Gate on an education trip.
The teacher and students had interest in history as well. The teacher
narrated that India Gate, official name Delhi Memorial, originally called
All-India War Memorial, monumental sandstone arch in New Delhi,
dedicated to the troops of British India who died in wars fought
between 1914 and 1919.The teacher also said that India Gate, which is
located at the eastern end of the Rajpath (formerly called

the Kingsway), is about 138 feet (42 metres) in height.

1. What is the angle of elevation if they are standing at a distance of

42m away from the monument?
2. They want to see the tower at an angle of 600 . So, they want to
know the distance where they should stand and hence find the
distance

3. If the altitude of the Sun is at 60 , then the height of the vertical

tower that will cast a shadow of length 20 m is

4. The ratio of the length of a rod and its shadow is 1:1 . find the
angle of elevation of the Sun is
