Problem-Solving Practice Problems: Chemical Equilibrium

1. For the reaction:

2SO₂(g) + O₂(g) ⇌ 2SO₃(g),
the equilibrium constant Kc is 0.50. If the initial concentrations of SO₂ and O₂ are 1.00 M and 0.50 M, respectively,
and there is no SO₃ initially, calculate the equilibrium concentrations of all species.

2. For the reaction:

H₂(g) + I₂(g) ⇌ 2HI(g),
the equilibrium constant Kc is 54.3 at a given temperature. If the initial concentrations of H₂ and I₂ are both 0.10
M, and the concentration of HI is 0.50 M at equilibrium, calculate the equilibrium concentrations of H₂ and I₂.

3. A mixture of 1.00 M N₂ and 3.00 M H₂ is placed in a 1.00 L container and allowed to reach equilibrium for the
reaction:
N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) ⇌ 2NH₃(g).
The equilibrium concentration of NH₃ is found to be 0.50 M. Calculate the equilibrium concentrations of N₂ and
H₂.

4. For the decomposition of PCl₅:

PCl₅(g) ⇌ PCl₃(g) + Cl₂(g),
the equilibrium constant Kc is 0.25. If the initial concentration of PCl₅ is 1.00 M and there are no products
initially, calculate the equilibrium concentrations of all species.

5. For the equilibrium:

CO(g) + H₂O(g) ⇌ CO₂(g) + H₂(g),
Kc is 4.00 at a given temperature. If the initial concentrations of CO and H₂O are both 1.00 M and there are no
products initially, calculate the equilibrium concentrations of all species.

6. For the reaction:

CaCO₃(s) ⇌ CaO(s) + CO₂(g),
the partial pressure of CO₂ is 0.30 atm at equilibrium. Calculate Kp for the reaction.

7. For the reaction:

H₂(g) + Br₂(g) ⇌ 2HBr(g),
Kc = 20.0 at a given temperature. If the initial concentrations of H₂ and Br₂ are both 0.10 M, calculate the
equilibrium concentrations of all species.

8. For the equilibrium:

2NO₂(g) ⇌ N₂O₄(g),
the equilibrium constant Kc is 0.50. If the initial concentration of NO₂ is 2.00 M and there is no N₂O₄ initially,
calculate the equilibrium concentrations of all species.
9. For the reaction:
2SO₃(g) ⇌ 2SO₂(g) + O₂(g),
Kc = 0.10 at a given temperature. If the initial concentration of SO₃ is 2.00 M and there are no products initially,
calculate the equilibrium concentrations of all species.

10. For the reaction:

N₂(g) + O₂(g) ⇌ 2NO(g),
the equilibrium constant Kc is 0.25 at a certain temperature. If the initial concentrations of N₂ and O₂ are both
1.00 M, and there is no NO initially, calculate the equilibrium concentrations of all species.
