Summary: How To Go About It–The Basics

1.) Title
a.) Pay attention to the title. What topic does it suggest the
article is about?
b.) Does it suggest a particular point of view on the topic?
c.) What expectations does the title create?

2.) First Paragraph Of The Article

a.) What is the topic? Is there a thesis statement?
b.) Is the article informational or is it argumentative?
-Informational: the article provides information but does
not make an argument. The article will not have a thesis.
-Ex.: The history of baseball
-Argumentative: the article makes an argument. The article will
have a thesis.

-Ex.: Baseball is the best sport ever (this is a thesis
statement)

3.) Body Paragraphs

a.) The first sentence of a body paragraph is the topic sentence.
-The topic sentence tells you what the whole paragraph
is about. If you don’t understand the topic sentence, you
will not understand the paragraph.
-The topic sentence provides the majority of the
information that you need for a basic summary.
b.) Use topic sentences to help you understand paragraphs that
are difficult to grasp

4.) Conclusion Paragraph

The conclusion paragraph will often contain a very brief
restatement/summary of the articles main points. Guess
what…this is useful if you are trying to summarize something.
This feature is most common in argumentative articles, but you
may also see it elsewhere.
