SITE ANALYSIS

Site analysis is an integral part of any design project. In this Design Studio, you are required to do
the site analysis collectively in four groups. The areas that needs to be covered are as illustrated in
the diagram below:

Legal context
(Official zoning, building regulations and standards)
(Group 4)

Built areas Unbuilt

(Group 2) areas
(Group 3)
The site
(Group 1)

Physical context

Social and cultural context

(Group 4)

The tasks of each group are further explained below:

Group 1: The site

a) Location
b) Size and dimensions
c) Access
d) Climatic analysis
e) Natural and physical features (wind direction, solar orientation, topography, vegetation,
rocks and/or any other natural elements within the site)
f) Man-made features (any buildings, walls, power poles, drives and paving patterns and/or
any other man-made elements within the site)
g) Sources of noise
h) Views to and from the site

Group 2: Site context – Built areas

a) Built Areas
b) Type of spatial organization (geometric, organic, dense, disperse), highlighting the built
parts of the site plan and evaluate the distribution of construction, shapes, mass, voids,
etc.
c) Building Heights: One story, two story,... or small, medium, high and have a category with
the definition — small (1 to 2 story), medium (3 to ...)
d) Architectural language within the context (using photos and sketches): The styles, themes
and architectural elements used in the site surroundings.
e) Existing zoning/building types (residential (single house, multi-story...), commercial,
services, cultural, educational, health, religious, industrial, recreational, etc.
f) Uses by floor if there are multiple uses within the same building (house, shop, office,
restaurant, café, bank, gas station, hotel, etc.)

Group 3: Site context – Unbuilt areas

a) Circulation: surrounding roads and pedestrian paths
b) Roads hierarchy (names, destinations...) Principal, secondary and tertiary road
c) Roads capacity (number of lanes , one way/two ways — direction)
d) Pedestrian hierarchy (side walk, park, square...)
e) Public transport (stops and lines)
f) Parking (formal: parallel, perpendicular or angle parking - and informal)
g) Undeveloped properties and public open spaces (parks, green Areas, children’s
playground, football court, etc.)

Group 4: The social and cultural context and the Legal context
a) Any scheduled or informal activities within the neighborhood (time, frequency, impact,
etc.)
b) The overall atmosphere within the neighborhood considering different times (e.g. quiet or
busy, safe or unsafe, inviting or not inviting, encouraging pedestrian movement or not,
etc.). This needs observation and reflection and may involve some personal judgments.
c) Zoning maps
d) Building regulations for the site and its surroundings
General guidelines
- You are encouraged to use maps, photography, sketches and diagrams (as appropriate).
