Please note that this lab has four parts to do

Normal and Plasmolyzed Cells Lab 2023

Part 1
-Use your notes and the procedures for the lab in the pdf
document to answer the following questions.

1) Put two or three drops of what on the left side of the slide?
Tap water
2) Put two or three drops of 6% what on the right side of the slide?
Salt water
3) Place one in the water on each side of the slide?
Elodea leaf
4) Add coverslips to both leaves and make sure the two liquids on the slide
do not do what?
Run together

5) a) How long should you wait before observing the leaf under both low
and high power?
2 or three minutes
b) Why should you wait?
So the cells respond to the environment
6) Define turgor pressure
The pressure that water molecules exert against the cell wall

7) Define plasmolysis
The shrinking or wilting of a cell

Part 2 (Lab part)

1) Paste a picture of normal elodea cells below. (The picture
should be high power)
2) Paste a picture of plasmolyzed elodea cells below. (The
picture should be high power)

3) Compare and contrast the two pictures below

Compare =both are pictures of elodea leaves

Contrast = 1st on has good turgor pressure, 2nd one has low
turgot pressure
Part 3
Read the following three statements before answering the
questions below:
A) Elodea cells normally contain 1% salt and 99% water on
the inside
B) Tap water used in this investigation contains 1% salt and
99% water
C) Salt water used in this investigation contains 6% salt and
94% water

1) Answer the following questions about the cells in tap water

 a) What is the percentage of water outside the cells? 99%
 b) What is the percentage of water inside the cells?99%
 c) How do the percentages compare? same
 d) What type of solution is this? isotonic

2) Answer the following questions about the cells in salt water

 a) What is the percentage of water outside the cell at the
investigation's start? 94%
 b) What is the percentage of water inside the cells at the
invesigation's start? 99%
 c) When will water move across the cell's membrane?
When the salt enters?
d) What type of solution is this?
Hypertonic

Part 4
Why is this plant drooping?
Because the turgor pressure has decreased due to a loss of
water.
